Abstract

A refrigerated waste bin made of metal and plastics stores household waste at a temperature which inhibits the growth of bacteria and therefore controls decay and eliminates odours. The bin may have insulated/refrigerated walls f like a conventional fridge and is kept cool by the use of conventional mains powered refrigeration components (g, Fig 3) located at the back of the bin. The bin may have a domed top b fitted with a rubber sealed flip-action lid/door a similar to a refrigerator or freezer. The domed lid b is insulated but not refrigerated allowing the lid b to be removed for cleaning or to replace a waste bag/liner c which may be retained in a light plastic internal bin d.

Description

A NEW TYPE OF DOMESTIC WASTE BIN
The invention relates to a mains-powered device/appliance consisting of a freestanding, refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle.
Storing and disposing of household waste is certainly one of the least pleasant chores in the modern home. The smell of decaying food waste and food residue clinging to empty packaging is a nuisance and can attract flies and vermin. While the problem can be dealt in part by wastedisposal sink units, some food waste must still be stored in the kitchen waste bin. To address the issues of decay and odour and to bring the waste bin up to date as a new type of modern kitchen appliance, the invention combines refrigeration technol-
ogy with the existing concept of waste-bin/receptacles in order to store waste at a temper-
ature which inhibits the growth of bacteria so as to eliminate the resultant odour and achieve a greater degree of convenience and hygiene thus avoiding the problems associat-
ed with conventional methods of waste storage. Fitted with a rubbersealed, flip-action lid/door similar to a refrigerator or freezer, the invention would contain any odours that persist before the cooling process has completed. While this concept would have more obvious advantages in hot climates, it is also very relevant in modern centrally heated homes where the kitchen in particular can become very warm, even in the winter espe-
cially with ovens and other appliances producing additional heat at various times of day.
The invention, as shown in Figures 1-3, is a freestanding unit with conventional style metal exterior waste bin (Fig l) but with insulated/refrigerated walls (Fig 2f) constructed in principal like a conventional freezer except that the walls would form a tube shape.
The domed top (Fig 2b) would be similarly insulated but need not be refrigerated and would have a flip-action door with rubber seals (Fig 2a). As no connections for power or refrigerant would be necessary to the top, it could be easily removed for access (Fig 2b) for cleaning or to replace waste-bag/liner (Fig 2c) which would be retained in a light plastic internal bin (Fig 2d) with cut-out handles (Fig 2e) to ensure easy removal.
Fig 1 shows the front view of the refrigerated waste bin.
Fig 2 shows the refrigerated waste bin with lid/door (Fig 2a) open and with the top (Fig 2b) removed to allow access for bag/liner (Fig 2c) replacement and cleaning.
Fig 3 shows the rear view of the refrigerated waste bin with its conventional mains-
powered refrigeration components (Fig 3g) situated at the back.

Claims (5)

1. A refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle in the form of a freestanding, metal and plastic constructed unit which stores household waste at a temperature which inhibits the growth of bacteria so as to control decay, eliminate the resultant odour and thus achieve a greater level of convenience and hygiene.
2. A refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle as claimed in claim 1 which utilises conventional mains-powered refrigeration components located at the back.
3. A refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle as claimed in claim 1 having insulated, refrigerated walls constructed in principal like a conventional freezer, except that the walls would form a tube shape.
4. A refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle as claimed in claim 1 having a domed top which would be similarly insulated but need not be refrigerated and would have a flip-action door with rubber seals and could be easily removed for access as no connections for power or refrigerant would be necessary.
5. A refrigerated, domestic waste-bin/receptacle as claimed in claim 1 having an internal waste-bag/liner which would be retained in a light plastic bin with cut-out holes for handles to ensure easy removal.
