Abstract

239,176. Scott & Williams, Inc., (Assignees of Barnes, C. B., McDermott, C. J., Reynolds, H. G., (Executors of Scott, R. W.), and Page, A. E.). Aug. 29, 1924, [Convention date]. Circular machines.-Plated horizontal stripes are obtained bv the use of a device which reverses the feeding position of the yarns, when two are employed, and also the tension, so that the facing yarn is always under more tension than the backing yarn or yarns. The yarn fingers F are slotted at s and pivoted on a cross-pin 554 and are moved radiallv out of action by thrust bars 460. The rear end of each finger F carries a plate 11 connected by a link 12 and a tension spring 13 to a lever bar 14. The upper end of each bar 14 is connected to a plate p on the latch ring by a tension spring 16 while the lower end is pivoted to a bell-crank 17. Each finger F normally rests with an adjustable screw 12<a> carried by the plate 11 bearing against a vertical surface of the latch ring. The bell-cranks 17 are pivoted on a stud 18 and their lower ends carry adjustable blocks 17a. When the blocks bear on cams 22 on the surface of a pattern drum 20 the corresponding yarn fingers are pulled away from the needle circle. The drum is driven by a hook plate 23a acting on a ratchet 21, a brake b preventing overrunning. The plate 23a is mounted on a bar 23 passing through a slotted guide plate 28 and pivoted at the other end to an arm 24 carrying a roller 26 running on a heart cam 25 which turns once for each revolution of the needle cylinder. When the cylinder begins to reciprocate for making the heel of a stocking &c. a cam 501 on the main pattern drum 120 lifts a lever 530 and an arm 531 fixed to it lifts the bar 23 until the hook plate 23<a> no longer engages the ratchet 21. When the foot has been completed the striping yarn fingers are removed from action and the lever 530 is lifted by a cam 502 to such a height that the hook plate 23<a> is able to drive the ratchet 21 until a low tooth 21<b> is reached, after which the bar 23 reciprocates idly. This results in the striped pattern being always started at the beginning of the cycle. The lever 530 is also connected by an adjustable toggle 533 to a gear segment which makes one complete reciprocation during four revolutions of the needle cylinder. By adjusting the position of the dead centre of the toggle, the bar 23 can be made to advance the ratchet 21 one tooth and miss the next one or three teeth, advance two teeth and miss the next two. or advance three teeth and miss the fourth. The yarns y<1>, y<2> pass through tension devices consisting of pairs of spring-pressed convex discs d held from turning by a pin f lying across notches in the edges of the discs. Below each disc is a curved arm g connected by a wire h to each lever bar 14. The backward movement of a bar 14 causes the upper end of the arm g to push the discs d apart and reduce the tension on the corresponding yarn y<2>. Meanwhile the other bar 14 has moved forward and the corresponding yarn y<1> has been tensioned by the release of its tension discs. The combined effect, of the variation in tension and the change, of position of the yarns is to cause the yarn y' to feed to the front of the fabric while the yarn y<2> feeds to the back. The yarn that is under the less tension is guided by a corner of the throat plate 559.
