Abstract

A harness made up of a mains power cable 1 with plug (3, fig 2) and a telephone cable 2 having a plug (5, fig 2) enclosed in sheath 4. The harness may be wound on a reel (6, fig 2).

Description

239 1 399
- 1 A Combination Cable The present invention is concerned with the provision of extension cables for mains power or telephone communication.
5 It is well known to provide extension cables for mains power or telephone communication. However it is now common to desire both mains and telephone services at a point remote from a wall socket. This is usually achieved by the use of a separate mains extension lead and telephone extension lead. This is inconvenient for various reasons including the need to lay, recover and store the cables separately.
10 Accordingly the present invention provides a combination extension comprising, a length of high current mains power cable having a mains plug fitted at one end and a mains socket fitted at the other end, a length of low current signal cable having a plug fitted at one end and a telephone socket fitted at the other end, and 15 means to bind the signal cable in parallel with the mains cable to form a combination cable.
A combination according to claim 1 wherein the signal cable is compatible with a telephone signal and the plug and socket are compatible with a standard telephone plug and socket respectively.
20 Preferably the signal cable is four core overall lapped screen cable. The means may comprise conveniently comprise a substantially continuous flexible sheath which may be rolled ot extruded on to the combination. It is convenient to store the combination cable on a reel from which it is extensible. Preferably the reel is secured rotatably in a housing so that, one end of the combination cable bearing one of the plugs 25 or the sockets can be extended through an aperture in the housing and the other of the sockets or plugs are mounted in a panel formed on the housing.
A combination cable embodying the present invention will now be described, by way of exampie7 with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a section through the combination, Figure 2 is a section through a reel and housing supporting the combination and 5 Figure 3 is a partial plane view of the combination.
In figure 1 shows a combination cable in section. A high current (e.g. rated for 13 Amps), two core mains cable 1 is shown in combination with a four core shielded low current signal cable 2. According to requirements the two core mains cable may be replaced by three core. The shielding of the signal cable is earthed via connections (not 10 shown) to a mains plug 3 connected to one end of the mains cable 1. The mains cable 1 and signal cable 2 are bound together by means of a continuous plastic sheath 4 which is extruded or wrapped around the mains and signal cables.
A conventional telephone plug 5 is connected to one end of the signal cable 2.
The combination cable is wound onto a hollow reel 6 which is shown part sectioned in 15 figure 2. One end of the combination cable remote from the plugs is fed through an aperture in the reel 6. A conventional three pin mains socket 7 is mounted in a flange 7A formed at one end of the reel 6 and connected to the mains cable 1 of the combination cable. The signal cable 2 is led through the hollow reel and out to connect to a telephone socket 8 also formed in the flange 7A.
20 The reel 7 and combination cable are rotatably received into a housing 9 with plug ends of the cable extending through a port 10 formed in a circumferential surface of the housing. Thus the cable can be reeled out from the housing 10.
About a meter of the ends of the signal and mains cable are freed from the shroud to provide for connection to separated telephone and mains sockets.
