Abstract
A cover for a lounger or similar having a length greater than its width characterised by the provision of retaining means towards, or at, either end of the length of the cover whereby each end part of the cover can be engaged with a structural member of a body supporting device to provide for the cover to lie over a major upward facing part of the device. The cover may also have intermediate retaining means and the retaining means may be removable from the cover.
Description
COVER This invention relates to a cover which enables a user to secure the
cover in place over an object on which the user wishes to lie or sit. Hereinafter such a cover will be referred to as being 'of the type described'. Such a cover can be used on a wide range of body supporting devices including loungers, chairs, bunks and beds.
It is a common practice for a person using a recliner or other body supporting device to spread a towel over that part of a lounger upon which they are going to place themselves. A towel is readily carried and deposited on a selected device in order to show that that device has been reserved for use by the user even if not immediately occupied by the user. This act of reservation can be done regardless of whether the towel has been opened out to form a cover or just left folded or rolled up.
According to the present invention there is provided a cover of the type described having a length greater than its width characterized by the provision of retaining means towards, or at, either end of the length of the cover whereby each end part of the cover can be engaged with a structural member of a body supporting device to provide for the cover to lie over a major upward facing part of the device.
According to a first preferred version of the present invention the retaining means is of resilient material According to a second preferred version of the present invention or of the first preferred version thereof the retaining means is of, or is predominantly of, similar material to that forming at least some of the remainder of the cover.
According to a third preferred version of the present invention or of any preceding preferred version thereof the retaining means include ties or interacting components providing for a Remountable loop for securing the retaining means to a structural member of the device with which the cover is engaged.
" " 2:."',. '2'
According to a fourth preferred version of the present invention or of any preceding preferred version thereof each retaining means is demountably attached to the cover.
According to a fifth preferred version of the present invention or of any preceding preferred version thereof wherein further retaining means are provided along the length of the cover intermediate the retaining means to provide for the engagement of an intermediate part of the cover with a structural member of the body supporting device. An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of a sun lounger and cover combination of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from above from one end and one side; Figure 2 shows the combination of Figure 1 viewed from above; and Figure 3 shows the combination of Figure 1 viewed from beneath.
The figures variously show a sun lounger combination 11 made up of a lounger support structure 12 on chassis 13 and a cover 14 stretched over parts incorporated in the structure 12.
The structure 12 comprises three sections: head section 15, body section 16 and foot section 17. The sections 15 - 17 are mounted on chassis 13 which has central side handles 18,19 and feet 20 - 23. The head section 15 is pivotably attached to the chassis 13 to enable the head section 14 to be angled relative to the body section 15 in a conventional manner.
The cover 14 in this case is of woven towelling material.
At head end 25 of the cover 14 there is provided a retaining means in the form of a pocket 26 formed by turning the edge of the towelling material over to form and securing it to the main part of the cover. a pocket. The end region of the turned over part of the cover 14 has a sequence of elasticised threads sewn into it to provide for a :..:. À

degree of resilience in the pocket whereby the pocket acts to retain itself in contact with whatever structural member the cover is attached to.
At foot end 27 of the cover 14 there is provided a retaining means in the form of a pocket 28 formed by a turned over end region of the cover 14.
The cover is provided with profiled central peripheries 29, 30 to ensure that the edges of the cover 14 are not brought into contact with side handles 18, 19.
The cover 14 is readily attached to, and removed from, the structure 12 by means of the pockets 26, 28. When not attached the cover 14 is readily rolled up and carried in the manner of a bath towel. However by providing the pockets 26, 28 the cover 14 is readily and securely attached to the support structure 12. When attached the cover is held in place and cannot be not readily displaced from the structure such as by wind, inadvertent dragging or contact. The method of attachment also ensures that the cover is not readily displaced by movement of somebody lying on the cover. These features are not available from an unattached cover, such as a towel, spread over a conventional lounger.
If necessary the cover can be provided with retaining means intermediate its end such as in the region of the profiled central peripheries 29, 30 to ensure that even when, for example, the head region is angled upwardly from the remainder of the lounger. By using intermediate retaining means the cover is readily held down onto the central part of the lounger so that the cover conform closely to the most if not all of an upper surface of the lounger.
In the exemplary embodiment the retaining means 26, 28 are of identical material to that forming the coverl4. Alternatively the pockets can be provided by material differing to a greater or lesser extent to the material forming the major part of the cover. . ....

In the exemplary embodiment the retention is in the form of a pocket having elasticised inserts. However the retaining means can be provided by ties or interacting components (comprising or including 'Velcro' (RTM)) . These serve to provide for a demountable loop for securing the cover to a structural member of the device.
In the exemplary embodiment the retaining means are formed integrally with the cover 14. However one or more of the retaining means can be detachably secured to the cover typically to enable the retaining means to be securely attached to different covers to provide for secure attachment to the lounger. By means of the or each demountable attachment the main body of the cover can be treated separately typically for washing or cleaning purposes.
