Abstract

A sensing device for detecting human intrusion into the load space of vehicles with curtain sides (1) comprises capacitive sensor strips (2) connected to sensor circuitry (3) wherein the strips have a field of view on the inside of the curtain only so as to detect the presence of humans in close proximity to the inside of the curtain but not the outside. The sensor strips have a grounded conductive strip on the one side to direct the capacitive sensing field to the inside of the curtain. Alarm means warn of human intrusion but the sensor is not affected by inanimate loads within the vehicle.

TITLE: CURTAIN SIDE INTRUSION SENSING DEVICE
Description of the Invention.
The invention relates to a sensing device that may be used for the detection of intrusion on curtain sided commercial vehicles, or other similar secure curtain situations.
It is well known that curtain sides on commercial vehicles are vulnerable to intrusion whilst stopped or travelling very slowly. It is also well known that Movement sensors located within the load space are commonly used, however these rely on line of sight and can be obscured by the load.
According to the present invention sensing is localised and will detect a Human presence entering the inner space of a lorry trailer via the curtain sides, whilst ignoring anyone passing close by and any inanimate loads within the trailer load space.
The device is affixed to the inside of the curtain, being highly flexible so as not to impede the movement of the curtain for loading and unloading.
Methods of putting the invention into effect in a commercial vehicle application will now be described by way of example only, with reference to accompanying drawings.
Sensing strips 2 will be affixed vertically to the webbing on the inside of the curtain 1.
The sensing strips 2 extending from a point above the trailer deck to a point short of the roof, see the General Arrangement on page 3.
The sensing strips 2 will consist of a grounded conductive strip 5, bonded onto a soft low density foam strip 6 which in tum, is bonded onto a further narrower conductive strip 7.
The narrower strip 7 is finally covered with a fine non metallic cover 8, to provide protection, The sensing strip assembly 5,6,7,8, is then attached to electronic circuitry 3, that provides the sensing capability to each sensing strip assembly 5,6,7,8,. The electronic circuitry 3, is in turn connected via sockets to the loom 4. Preferably the loom 4 is connected back to an alarm control unit.
The sensing principle in the example, is by measuring capacitive charge, where electronic circuitry 3, produces a sensing field 9, down the whole length of the sensing strip 2, that
extends outwards in a semicircular form, this field will detect human presence entering
into that field. Preferably the field is shaped by the grounded strip to form only a
semicircle, thus no detection will occur on the other side of the curtain 1, The features disclosed in the forgoing description the following claims or the
accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of materials, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.

Claims (6)

1. A sensing device that may be used for the detection of intrusion on curtain sided commercial vehicles, by detecting human presence in close proximity to the inside of the curtain yet not being affected by close presence or human contact with the outside of the curtain.
2 A sensing device according to claim I wherein the curtain is employed as a screen or as a fabric construction, like that of a tent.
3. A sensing device according to claim 1 wherein the sensor is other than a strip formation
4. A sensing device according to claim I wherein detection is required on both sides of the curtain or screen.
5. A sensing device according to claim 1 wherein the sensing strips are hard wired to the alarm control unit or communicate with the control unit by some other means.
6. A sensing device according to claim 1 wherein the sensing steps are affixed to a solid screen where human presence needs to be detected.
