Abstract

An exercise apparatus comprises a cylindrical bar with a cord 4 attached to a spindle 3. At the other end of the cord there is a chain (a, fig 3), which is then attached to a leather strap with a buckle (b, fig 3), which holds a weight. The chain prevents the involuntary movement of the weight. The central spindle is covered by a tube 2 to protect clothing and prevent the user becoming entangled with the cord. The handles 1 are covered with rubber to improve grip and reduce calluses on the hands. The apparatus may be used to strengthen the muscles in the hands, wrist and forearms, and to improve the grip.

Description

1 2389058
The Gripper This invention relates to a portable and versatile exercise device, which is used to strengthen, the user's shoulders hands and forearms by use of resistance and the lifting of a variable loose or fixed weight.
The invention is cheap to produce and maintenance free.
Background
An athlete's grip is of paramount importance and essential in the majority of sporting events. Competitions are"won and lost" due to poor grip and weakness in the shoulders and forearms.
This device is specifically designed to improve competitors performance in the following sports: Judo (throws,strangleholds/arm locks) À Rugby ( Rucks, mauls and ball handling skills) À Racket sports ( Serve and ball control) À Cricket ( Bowling and Control of the bat) À Motor sports ( Control of the handle bars and steering wheel) Shooting (Provides a firmer plafform/steady hand) À Weight Lifting ( Grip/control of the 'bar') À Horse Riding ( Control of the reins) À Golf ( Control of the club/putter) All the above sports have a large participation in the United Kingdom and World-wide.
This invention can be used to improve the quality of life for all it's users, to improve the Physique, as a convalescence aid, make everyday tasks such as opening a screw Jar lid or holding a walking stick easier (having exercised the relevanVappropriate muscle groups).
( Problems that the invention solves A variety of improvised devices and exercise regimes are used in gymnasiums throughout the Country.
Athletes use fixed weights to 'curl' the weight bar, which can put unnecessary strain on the lower back, if not seated correctly.
Loose weights are attached to a string, which has no purposefully designed handles, which in turn causes the rod/bar to slip through the user's hands when sweaty and jerk the lower back. This device also causes unwanted calluses on the palms of the hands.
The weight is not properly attached to the string and can become unattached from the string causing the weight to fall on the user's feet. The weight is not securely attached to the horizontal bar/rod and can tangle, having no 'feeding' mechanism or entrap the user's clothing. The weight can slip and'jerk'/'pull violently' on the user's backiframe. Essential Features 1. A specially designed rubber handle to ensure the handle does not slip through the user's hands. It prevents skin calluses on the palms of the hands.
2.A unique horizontal rod/bar made of either metal or wood (the cheaper option) with a 'Spindle' (with teeth) to maintain resistance and smooth motion during the exercise.
3. A plastic cover/tubing that covers the rod/bar and spindle mechanism which prevents the cord/chain becoming entangled, with a hole/feeding the cord/chain onto the spindle mechanism.
4.A chain attached to a leather adjustable strap that has a buckle to fasten /secure the variable weight. The chain prevents the involuntary movement of the weight.
/ Detailed Description of the invention
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a full length view of "The Gripper"/invention Figure 2 shows a cross section of the shield/cover that contains the spindle mechanism Figure 3 shows the leather strap and chain used to attach the variable weight As shown in figure 1 the horizontal bar/rod with rubber handles (1).
The bar/rod can be made of either wood or metal (2). The horizontal bar/rod has the spindle mechanism with grooves/teeth (3) to which the reinforced cord or chain is attached (4) As shown in figure 2 the plastic cover/tubing (shield) (a) with the reinforced 'hole' (b) to feed the cord/chain to the spindle mechanism (c) As shown in figure 3 the metal chain attached to the leather strap (a) with a buckle (b) used to attach/secure the weight.
Flow to use the invention a) Select appropriate weight, the leather strap is used to fasten/attach the weight (the strap feeds through the hole in a normal barbell weight, found in most gymnasiums) and is secured using the buckle.
b) The user stands upright (preventing strain on the back). Extends both arms in front of the body, holding onto the rubber handles-
shoulder width apart.
c) Lock the elbows NB - a variation of this exercise can be performed with bent elbows d) Slowly rotate the bar by twisting the wrist, by feeding the handles through the palms of the hands, gripping and slightly releasing the grip as the bar is rotated e) The reinforced cord/chain will fed onto the spindle mechanism reverse the process and allow the weight to lower towards the ground.

Claims (8)

/ Claims- 'The Gripper'
1. A portable and versatile exercise device used to exercise and strengthen the shoulders hands and forearms
2. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1 has rubber handles, which significantly reduces the likelihood of calluses on the palms of the user's hands
3. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1 and 2 has a spindle device that retracts and releases the reinforced cord/chain which prevents unnecessary strain on the user's (if used correctly)
4. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1-3 has a cover ttubing (shield) that prevents the cord/chain interfering with the user's clothing
5. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1- 4 has a chain that prevents involuntary movement of the weight
6. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1-5 has a leather strap and buckle that secures the weight to the device and reduces the likelihood of injury caused if the weight becomes detached from the Gripper
7. The Gripper as claimed in claim 1-6 is made from metal, wood, rubber, reinforced cord, plastic, metal chain and leather.
8. The Gripper substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
