Abstract

A lawn mower security unit comprises a frame assembly 10 which forms an enclosure, the enclosure being open at its front to receive a lawn mower with its handles projecting, and a locking part 40 for engaging with the frame assembly to prevent withdrawal of the lawn mower. The locking part 40 is generally T-shaped, having a longitudinal member 44 arranged to fit into a longitudinal tubular member 34 of the frame assembly, and a transverse member 42 arranged to extend behind the handles of the lawn mower and so prevent its withdrawal from the enclosure.

Description

238851 3
( Lawn Mower Security Guard The present invention relates to a security unit for a lawn mower.
In recent years, it has become increasingly common for lawn mowers to be stolen from the garages of domestic premises.
5 I have now devised a security unit which addresses this problem. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a lawn mower security unit comprising a frame assembly which forms an enclosure, the enclosure being open at its front 10 to receive a mower with its handles projecting, and a locking part for engaging with the frame assembly to prevent withdrawal of the mower.
Preferably the locking part is generally T-shaped, with its longitudinal member arranged to engage the frame assembly 15 and its transverse member arranged to extend behind the handles of the mower, so preventing withdrawal of the mower from the enclosure. Preferably the longitudinal member of the locking part is arranged to fit into a longitudinal tubular member of the frame 20 assembly. Preferably a security pin is provided, for insertion through aligned holes in the longitudinal tubular member of the frame assembly and the longitudinal member of the locking part.
Preferably the end of the security pin is arranged to receive a padlock.
25 Preferably the frame assembly includes feet which are formed with holes to enable the assembly to be bolted to a concrete base.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the 30 accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a lawn mower security unit in accordance with the invention; FIGURE 2 is a side view of the security unit shown in Figure 1 and;
( FIGURE 3 is a top plan view of the security unit shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a security unit for a lawn mower, the security unit comprising a frame assembly 5 for receiving a lawn mower with its handles projecting from the assembly. The frame assembly comprises a pair of sub-frames 10,20 forming its opposite sides, each sub-frame comprising an inverted U-shape member 12,22 of circularsection metal bar or tube: plates 14,24 are welded to the ends of the members 12,22 10 to form feet, and a bar 16,26 is welded across each Ushape member 12,22 adjacent to its feet.
The two sub-frames 10,20 are spaced apart and joined by a number of transverse bars, including two bars 18,28 across the top and two bars 30, 32 across one end, or rear end, of the 15 assembly. The opposite end, or front end, of the frame assembly is open, but a generally T-shaped locking bar 40 is provided for obstructing it. The locking bar 40 comprises a transverse member 42 and a longitudinal member 44, the latter being formed of square-section metal bar or tube and comprising 20 a portion 44a projecting from the centre of the transverse member 42, then an inclined portion 44b and finally a portion 44c extending at right angles to the portion 44a.
A square-section metal tube 34 extends between the two transverse bars 18, 28 of the frame assembly, at their centres, 25 and is open at its front end to receive the end portion 44c of the locking bar 40. Both the tube 34 and the end portion 44c of the locking bar are formed with holes to receive a securing pin 46, the end of which is formed with a hole to receive a padlock. 30 The security unit is arranged to be bolted to a concrete base, by passing bolts through holes in the feet 14,24.
In use, the mower is pushed into the frame assembly via its open front, leaving its handles projecting from the front of the assembly, then the locking bar 40 is passed between the 35 handles and its end portion 44c engaged into the tube member
( 34. The longitudinal position of the locking bar is adjusted so that the securing pin 46 can be inserted, then a padlock is applied to the end of the securing pin, projecting from the underside of the tube member 34.
5 It will be appreciated that the security unit which has been described is of simple construction and easy to use, yet provides effective security for the lawn mower.

Claims (6)

  1. Cla s 1) A lawn mower security unit, comprising a frame assembly which
forms an enclosure, the enclosure being open at its front to receive a lawn mower with its handles projecting, and a 5 locking part for engaging with the frame assembly to prevent withdrawal of the lawn mower.
  2. 2) A lawn mower security unit as claimed in claim 1, in which said locking part is generally T-shaped, having a longitudinal member arranged to engage the frame assembly and a transverse 10 member arranged to extend behind the handles of the lawn mower, so preventing withdrawal of the lawn mower from said enclosure.
