Abstract

A lawn mower includes a wheeled chassis, two blade assemblies 8 and 9, an extendable grass collection box and a power source with means for regulation. The blade assemblies may be configured to operate in-line or side by side as an extended cutting blade 10. Also described is an optional extending mast for the power cable.

Description

238829 1
A Lawn Mower With Two Voriable Blade Assemblies This invention relates to a twin blade assembly lawn mower. The blade assemblies being capable of operating in parallel or extended to form o single assembly wim substantially enhanced cutting width.
Lawn mowers available to the public have blades (cut paths) of up to 36 cenffmetres. The largest volume sale mowers have blades of 475 cenffmetres.
The blades are single assemblies either in cylindrical shape or horizontal. They are powered manually or by petrol or electric motors.
The small blade widths of the commercially economic models do not facilitate rapid cutting and extend me time necessary for cuffing grass particularly for medium to large size lawns.
According to me present invention mere is provided a lawn mower comprising two blade assemblies capable of operating in parallel thus cutting me grass twice during a single mowing action or extended to form a single blade or blade configuration that generates a substantially enlarged cutting path, a wheeled chassis, a power source eimer a petrol or electric motor, an extendable grass collection box which can be removed to facilitate blade extensionJretracffon or emptying, a handle for controlling me unit incorporating a motor/ blade speed regulator, an optional extending mast for keeping cable away from the operator. Specific embodiment of me invention will now be described by way of example wim reference to me accompanying drawings in which: ln Fig 1. Shows me mower wim blades and gram box unextended with blade assemblies operating together providing a double cut on each mowing actions 2/7 Fig 2. Shows me mower wim blades and grass box extended lo provide a cutting path that is substantially enlarged in width compared with me capability of the mower when configured in me mode described in 1/6 Fig 1.
3/7 Fig 3. Shows me mower wim grass box removed fig 4 facilitating access to me blade assemblies.
4n Fig S. Shows me blade assemblies extended.
Fig 6. Shows the blade assemblies configured in parallel.
5/7 Fig 7. Shows an alternative blade assembly whereby one assembly is inserted inside the omer mansion being facilitated by me extraction of one assembly from the other.
67 Fig 8. Shows the handle of me unit wim the cable mast unextended.
fig 9. Shows the handle of me unit with cable mast extended.
7D Fig 10. Shows an alternative configuration whereby one blade assembly 8 is at me front of me unit and me second 9 at the rear.
r it/ Referring to the drawings Fig 1 shows a wheeled chassis 1. incorporating a motor 8 housing 2 containing associated transmissions and drives Securely hastened to the main body of the unit is a gram box 3 which is capable of removal 6 to facilitate operation of me blade assemblies and emptying of the box. The grass box IS "end" 7 when the blade assemblies are extended as in Fig 2..
Fig 3. Shows the mower with blade assemblies in parallel wim Fig 4. me gram box removed to allow extension of me blades or emptying of me box.
Ease of operation is allowed by lifting handles S. Fig 6. Shows the blade assemblies in parallel configuration 8 & 9 & Fig 5 extended 10.
Fig 6 Shows an alternative system whereby one blade assembly is inserted inside me other and is extracted to extend the blade and in consequence me cut path.
Fig 7 Shows an alternative system whereby one beds assembly is at me rear of me mower and one at the front Fig 8 Shows the mower handle 13 wim cable mast 14 for electrically powered units. At rest the mast is parallel to the handle. When the unit is operated the mast is extended Fig 9 and secured utilising me joint 15 and fastener 16 to allow me operator unimpeded mowing.
When me blade assemblies are in parallel me mouver is used in conventional fashion albeit with greater perforrnancQ To extend the blades me gmss box is removed from me main body by undoing fastener 4. The front assembly is swung around to connect in series with the rear blade assembly and form one extended blade or a configuration which generates the same enhanced cut path. The grass box is the replaced and secured.
To revert h pamilel blade assemblies the process is reversed.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
    1) A lawn mower incorporating two blade assemblies capable of operating in parallel or as a single extended blade with a substantially expanded cut path, a wheeled chassis, a power source, and associated transmissions and drives, an extendable grass box which fastens securely to me main body, a handle for controlling the unit incorporating a blade/motor speed regulator, an optional mast for keeping electrical cable away from the operator.
    2) A lawn mower as in claim 1) capable of operating with the two blade assemblies in parallel or one inside the other culling the same area of grass twice during each mowing action 3) A lawn mower as in claim 1) capable of operating wim blade assemblies extended to form a single blade or in series mus providing a substantially increased cut path.
    4) A lawn mower as in claim 1) that has a grass box that can be removed to facilitate access to me blade assemblies or me emptying of me grass box.
    5) A lawn mower as in claim 1) which for models powered by electricity incorporates a cable mast which is a tube through which the cable is threaded or to which it is attached which is attached to the mower handle via a ball joint capable of being securely immobilized in the positron selected by me operator thus allowing me cable to be protected away form the operator.
    6) A lawn mower substantially described with reference to Figures 1 -10 of the accompanying drawings.
