Abstract

A fastener such as a nut (3), bolt (5) or washer includes a self adhesive membrane (2) for engagement with a workpiece (7) to secure the fastener to the workpiece (7) . The fastener may have a smooth outer profile.

Description

- 1 - 23881 72
Self adhesive industrial fasteners This invention relates to a method of securing industrial fasteners such as nuts, bolts and washers utilising a self adhesive membrane.
The system is simple and effective and could have many industrial and/or domestic (DIY) applications.
The invention helps overcomes many of the problems relating to the use of industrial fasteners. One of the main problems with present fasteners is in relation to corrosion.
If nuts, bolts and washers are used to fasten together two pieces of metal, and the metal is ferrous (mild steel for example) the act of tightening up the nut and bolt assembly causes damage to the surface. If the surface is painted, or plated (galvanised for example) the surface will very often become damaged, the protective layer afforded by the paint or plating will be removed as the nut and bolt are tightened, this then leaves the bolted (fastened) area open to corrosion.
This invention also works extremely well when fastening together weak or fragile materials such as glass, fibre glass, plastic sheeting such as Perspex, thin metal sheeting such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper or brass. The invention would be ideal in certain situations where these types of materials are used abundantly for example in the building of kit cars, caravans, boats, model making, car manufacture, plane manufacture and many others. The self adhesive pad utilised in the design of the nuts, bolts and washers spreads the loading on the bolted area, and helps to overcome any slight deformities there may be in the materials being fastened. The invention also keeps a tightened nut and bolt assembly in constant tension thereby being extremely useful in areas where vibration may be a problem. The self adhesive pad also forms a water tight barrier (seal) which again reinforces the anti- corrosion aspects of this design. The self adhesive aspects of this invention means, that it would only be necessary to work from one side of a work piece. This is difficult to explain, but I will do my best.
If it becomes necessary to fasten together two large pieces of, for example metal sheeting, very often it is physically impossible to reach both sides of a work piece at the same time. If the work piece has to be bolted together this will mean that you will have to be able to get to both sides of the work piece in order to tighten the nut and bolt. If on the other hand you utilise a self adhesive nut on one side, the task becomes much simpler.

On page - 4 -, Fig 1, fig 2 and fig 3, show three representations of the self adhesive fasteners principal. Fig I is a representation of a self adhesive nut, fig 2 is a representation of a self adhesive washer, and fig 3 is a representation of a self adhesive bolt. All the drawings show the self adhesive membrane attached to the nut, bolt and washer with the adhesive pad protective paper layer being removed from the self adhesive pad. In these drawings the representations of the nut and the bolt have no 'flats' on which to locate a spanner, due to the self adhesive nature of the nuts and bolts this becomes unnecessary, but could be incorporated into the design depending on how, or in what situation the fasteners were to be utilised.
I - Self adhesive pads protective paper strip.
    2 - Self adhesive pad.
    3 - The 'nut'.
    4 - The 'washer'.
    5 - The 'bolt'.
6 - A hole fashioned through sheet materials for the sake of example.
7 - Two pieces of sheet material.
The drawings on page - 5 - show sectional representations of 3 a open nut (a nut which allows the bolt to pass through it, and 3a a domed nut.
Fig 6 shows how a self adhesive nut would be used with a conventional bolt. The nut 3 would adhere to one side of the materials 7 to be fastened. A conventional bolt would pass through the opening 6 and then be screwed into the nut 3. The sticky nature of the self adhesive pad 2 would not allow the nut 3 to freely turn whilst the bolt was being tightened up.
Fig 7 shows how a self adhesive bolt 5 would be used with a conventional nut. The bolt 5 would adhere to one side of the materials 7 to be fastened. A conventional nut would then be screwed onto the self adhesive bolt 5. The sticky nature of the self adhesive pad 2 would not allow the bolt 5 to freely turn whilst the nut was being tightened.
    - 3 The self adhesive fasteners could be used in many areas where it is difficult or unsatisfactory to utilise traditional fasteners. The main use for the self adhesive fasteners would be in the areas where the materials being fastened together are fragile, such as thin sheet plastics, glass fibre or glass, although this may not necessarily be the case as the self adhesive fasteners would work equally well with thicker materials such as metal girders, for example when building a new structure.
The self adhesive membrane could be made of many materials such as rubber or plastic, in this case the self adhesive membrane is manufactured from Acrylic, which affords excellent moisture, corrosion and anti mould growth characteristics. The Acrylic pads also readily take many types of paint finish should this be deemed necessary. The self adhesive nuts, bolts and washers could be manufactured from many differing types of metals such as mild steel, stainless steel or high carbon steels, brass, copper or aluminium. They could also be manufactured from many types of plastic or rubber.
They could even be manufactured from wood or glass. The only governing factor seems to be the use and under what conditions they are to be used.
