Abstract

A device, including a recycled polymeric material comprising polyvinyl butyral, the polyvinyl butyral preferably being reclaimed from laminated windscreens. The polyvinyl butyral may be mixed with a filler, such as an inorganic filler, and a pigment. The device may be formed into a sheet, such as a waterproof membrane, having an extension retained preferably by freezing. Also claimed is a method of making the device, the method comprising mixing the polyvinyl butyral and optionally forming the mixture into a sheet.

Description

1 2387850
A RECYCLABLE DEVICE AND METHOD
The invention relates to a recyclable device and method for producing same.
Environmental considerations are generally to the fore in all aspects of manufacture of any manner of devices, and waterproofing is no exception. It has become a requirement to use recycled materials in producing all kinds of device. According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a device, comprising a recycled polymeric material, suitable a recycled plasticised polyvinyl butyral. The polyvinyl butyral may preferably be reclaimed from laminated windscreens. This provides a suitable material that can be recycled to provide a desired device.
The polyvinyl butyral may be mixed with a filler, suitably an inorganic filler.
This provides a suitable material, particularly when there is in addition a pigment or pigments. This can provide a suitable colour of device.
There may be a mixture of polyvinyl butyral, an inorganic filler, a pigment and process aids formed into a sheet. This provides a device which can be used in a variety of applications, the sheet being preferably formed in a sheet forming apparatus.
The sheet may be conditioned to have a retained extension, for example the extension being retained by freezing. This provides for retension of size
parameters during use, particularly when the device is a waterproof membrane. According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of making a device as hereinbefore defined, comprising the steps of separating polyvinyl butyral (PVB) from laminated windscreens, mixing the PVB with a filler, a pigment, and a process aid, heating and compounding the mixture in a hot-melt mixer, and forming the compounded mixture into a sheet. This is an efficient recyclable use of PVB. The hot-melt mixer may comprise an internal mixer, such as an excluder or Banbury mixer. The compounded mixture may be formed into a sheet by apparatus selected from calendar rolls, a roller die and a slit die. These each provide an efficient sheet forming apparatus. The sheet may have an extension memory applied thereto, suitably the extension memory may be applied by freezing the sheet in an extended state.
This provides for non-shrinkage of the material in use.
A waterproof membrane is a device embodying the membrane which can be formed to be environmentally acceptable by using reclaimed and recyclable materials which would otherwise be detrimental to the environment.
Windscreens or windshields of vehicles are usually made of a laminate of sheets of glass and/or plastic and through obsolescence accidents or Otherwise are often disposed of in say a breaker's yard.
A material present in such laminated windscreens is the polymer plasticised polyvinal butyral (PVB).
In the invention, PVB separated from laminated windscreens is cycled to form a device in the form of a waterproof membrane by being combined in the preferred embodiment with a filler such as an inorganic filler, a pigment or pigments and process aids such as stearates to enhance mixing. The combination is then mixed and compounded in a hot-melt internal mixer such as an extruder or Banbury mixer, and is then converted into a sheet by passing the mixed and compounded mixture through sheet forming apparatus such as calendar rolls, a roller die or a slit die. The extrudant in the form of a sheet can then be used for damp-proof and other waterproofing applications, for example as a damp-proof course, on a roof, or as tanking.
The invention thus provides a waterproof membrane which uses recycled PVB which would otherwise be detrimental to the environment by removing that PVB from the "disposed" chain. Moreover, the danp-proof membrane embodying the invention can be used as such even though the PVB absorbs water, as, in situ in a wall day, it is hidden, so aesthetic considerations doe not come into play, while it also absorbs moisture, which can enhance its damp-proofing qualities. Moreover, during the method used for manufacturing the sheet, the material can be extended beyond its usual yield limit and freezes as by being cooled so that the "memory" of its normal size parameter is frozen. When installed in a wall, say, as a dpc, the material cannot shrink as it could do under certain conditions and so retains desired parameters to act as a dpc over a range of ambient conditions.
