Abstract
A power spanner comprising of a hand held portable body 1, encapsulating an electric motor and drive with on / off control 4, which with adaptor sockets 2, of various sizes will hold and rotate a nut 3, down any length of bolt or screwed rod 5. Power may be provided by integral rechargeable battery or by cable and plug from a standard electrical power source. Controls for On / off, forward / reverse, variable speed and variable torque may be incorporated into the body of the power spanner.
Description
POWERED SPANNER
This invention relates to a powered spanner.
There are many existing hand held, portable power tools consisting of an electric motor, which through rotary motion, drive specifically designed tools, each to carry out a designated task which would previously have been carried out by hand. An example would be a powered screwdriver, where the rotating motion of the electric motor is transmitted through specifically designed screwdriver "bits" to drive in a screw or similar fixing. There are power tools available which, in conjunction with a conventional socket set, use a powered motor to rotate a nut, bolt, setscrew or similar fixing into position. All though these are used extensively in the manufacturing industry, particularly powered by compressed air, they are not common in light industry, the service industry or in the domestic DIY, environment. Moreover due to the inherent design of a conventional socket, the distance which a nut can be rotated down a length of screwed rod is restricted to the depth of the conventional socket. This varies with the size of socket but will rarely exceed 30 mm.
According to the present invention there is provided a power spanner comprising of a hand held portable body encapsulating a rechargeable battery, electrical motor and drive with on / off control, which with adaptor sockets of various sizes will hold and rotate a nut down any length of bolt or screwed rod and will hold and provide power to rotate conventional sockets and common drive bits.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:FIGURE 1 shows the power spanner.
FIGURE 2 shows the power spanner with a typical adaptor socket holding a nut and screwed rod.
FIGURE 3 shows the power spanner with a typical adaptor socket holding a conventional socket and bolt.
FIGURE 4 shows typical adaptor sockets which the power spanner will hold and drive various sizes of nuts, bolts, conventional sockets, screwdriver bits and other screwed fixings. -2 -
Referring to the drawings the power spanner as shown in Fig 1, comprises of a hand held, portable body 1, encapsulating an electrical motor and rotary drive with control button 4. A selection of adaptor sockets 2, typically as shown in fig 4, are provided to fit various sizes of nuts, bolts, conventional sockets, screwdriver bits and similar fixings.
As shown in Fig 2 a suitable adaptor socket 2, is selected and inserted into the power spanner drive. A spring ball catch arrangement of known design may be used to retain the adaptor socket in position. The adaptor socket is positioned over a nut 3 and will be rotated by depressing the control button 4. The nut can be screwed down any length of screwed rod 5, as the screwed rod will pass through the nut, adaptor socket and power spanner body, until the control button is released.
As shown in Fig 3 a suitable adaptor socket 2, is selected and inserted into the power spanner drive. The adaptor socket is inserted into a conventional socket 6, providing power to rotate bolt 7. A spring ball catch arrangement of known design may be used to retain the conventional socket in position.
Power for the power spanner may be provided by an integral rechargeable battery or by cable and plug from a standard electrical power source.
Controls for Onloff, forward/reverse, variable speed and variable torque may be incorporated into the body of the power spanner to give greater control and flexibility of use. -3 -
