Abstract

A cable hanger 10 has a semicircular shaped support surface 20 over which cables are draped, a retaining lip 30 over the front edge 22 of the support surface 20 to stop the cables falling off the hanger 10 and a fixing plate 40 allowing attachment of the hanger to eg, a wall, via screws through fixing holes 42a-c. A second lip may be provided over an opposite edge to that of lip 30. The hanger 10 may be formed by moulding and may be colour coded.

Description

Cable support bracket Technical Field
The present invention is in the field of brackets for use in supporting cables,
particularly patch and optic cables for use in the cabling of networked office systems. Background to the Invention
Modern office installations commonly incorporate networked computer and telecommunications systems. Such systems are often hard-wired through the use of suitable cabling. Cables employed for this purpose include those of the patch, multipair and optical cables. Such types of cable have a relatively complex structure, which can render them susceptible to damage if not handled and/or stored in an appropriate manner.
When installing cabling of the type described above there often arises the need to store lengths of cable in a manner which renders them readily accessible to fitters whilst avoiding any damage to the cables.
The Applicant has now devised a cable bracket which enables ready and accessible storage of cable, whilst reducing the propensity for cable damage.
Summary of the Invention
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a cable bracket for supporting a length of cable comprising a support defining an arcuate support surface for supporting said length of cable; provided to said support, a retainer for retaining the length of cable on said arcuate support surface; and a mounting for mounting the support to a defined surface.
The cable bracket of the present invention is suitable for use in supporting a length of cable. Typically, the cable is for use in office networking and is for example, a multipair cable (e.g. Cat 5, Cat 5E or Cat 6), a patching cord, a flbre optic cable or a fibre optic patching cable.
In use, one or more cables are draped over the arcuate support surface which acts as a support therefor. By arcuate support surface it is meant a surface which is capable of providing a support for one or more cable lengths and which is arcuate (i.e. curved) in form.
Suitably, the arcuate support surface defines a regular arc profile. For example, the surface defines an arc of a generally circular (i.e. constant radius) support profile. ' Preferably, the arcuate support surface defines a hemi-circular arc profile.
Suitably, the arc profile has a radius of not less than 2cm. Preferably, the arc profile has a radius of from 2cm to gem, more preferably from 4cm to 6cm.
The support is provided with a retainer for retaining the length of cable on the arcuate support surface. The retainer thereby acts such as to prevent the cable falling (e.g. slipping or sliding) off the support surface.
The retainer may take any suitable form. Suitably, the retainer is in the form of a retaining lip. Suitably, the retaining lip skirts a first edge (generally, the forward or outer edge) of the arcuate support surface.
In one aspect, the cable bracket additionally comprises a second retaining lip, wherein the second retaining lip skirts a second edge (generally, the inner edge) of the arcuate support surface. In this aspect, the supported cables are therefore prevented from falling off the support surface by the action of either one or both of the retaining lips, which are generally formed as an opposing pair.
The cable bracket comprises a mounting for mounting the support to a defined surface. Generally, the defined surface is a vertical surface such as the wall of a building. Indeed, wall mounting is a preferred option.
Suitably, the mounting comprises a fixing plate for fixing the support to a defined surface. Suitably, the fixing plate has fixing holes provided therein.
-,. ..-.. The cable bracket may be formed or manufactured by any suitable process. In one aspect, the cable bracket is formed by a moulding process (e.g. a blow-
moulding process).
The cable bracket may be formed from any suitable material including for example, plastic or polymeric materials.
P0057 - UK first filing According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a kit of parts comprising a cable bracket as described above and one or more cables.
The cable bracket is suitable for supporting the one or more cables.
Suitably, the one or more cables is selected from the group consisting of patch, multipair and optical cables.
In one aspect, the cable bracket and the one or more cables are mutually colour coded. Thus for example, both the cable bracket and cables are coloured or otherwise labelled withy particular colour which identifies the type of cable.
Brief description of the drawings
l Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1a shows a perspective rear view of cable bracket in accord with the present invention; Figure 1 b shows a side view of the cable bracket of Figure 1 a.
Figure 1c shows a cross-sectional view of the cable bracket of Figures 1a and 1 b taken along the line A-A of Figure 1 a.
Detailed description of the invention
The present invention is here described by means of examples, which constitute possible embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1a shows a rear view of cable bracket 10 herein, which is of generally hemi-circular form. Figure 1 b shows the bracket 10 in side view and Figure 1 c shows a cross-sectional view taken along line A-A as shown in Figure 1 a.
The bracket comprises a hemi-circular, arcuate support surface 20 of radius approximately 5cm; a retaining lip 30 which skirts the front edge 22 of the arcuate support surface; and a fixing plate 40 for fixing the bracket to a surface such as the wall of a building. The fixing plate is provided with plural fixing holes 42a-c for receipt of fixing screws.
In use, one or more lengths of cable (not shown) are draped over the arcuate support surface 20 and prevented from slipping off by the action of either or both of the retaining lip 30 and/or the wall of the building (not shown) to which the plate 40 is affixed.
