Abstract

An in-car-mounted personal computer includes within a custom case the components of a conventional laptop computer, a second cooling fan, a wireless mouse unit, a wireless LAN kit and an SVGA to TV converter. It is powered by a 12V DC to 240VAC convener. The computer has a conventional operating system and runs conventional application software, e.g. for Internet connectivity, e-mail, dictation, storage, voice over IP, video conferencing, audio/visual, route-finding, security and game-playing applications.

Description of how it works
The basis of this idea is originally a laptop. What I did was to convert the chassis of the laptop to be something a lot smaller. I removed the screen, keyboard, mouse and casing of the laptop and with some cutting and sheet metal created my own case.
in essence all I used from the original laptop was: Processor Motherboard Hard disk drive RAM DVD Drive Power adapter I created my own mini IDE cable as there were none to the spec I wanted. Using this cable I moved and mounted the hard disk drive on top of the processor cooling heat sink/plate. I then measured this with a themmometer to check it wouldn't over heat.
The mouse was replaced by an RF mouse which I was able to solder into the motherboard. The mouse was now able to be controlled from anywhere in the vehicle.
I had to add on an additional cooling fan due to the new restrictive case design. I found an old processor fan and converted this to fit and work off the voltage from the motherboard.
To be able to allow the unit to display onto a smaller screen, I had to buy a SVGA to TV converter and tweak it with different settings etc to make it display correctly on the screen (namely a Pioneer 6.5 In-car monitor). I then removed the case of the SVGA to TV converter and mounted it inside the case of my design.
I bought a wireless LAN kit and fitted that in too. This was a plug and play device that worked very well with the unit. I found that the positioning of the unit to the receptor was fundamental to its operation. It is also intractable with a mobile phone.
Being a PC at heart, any software compliant with the Windows operating system would be able to run on my design. This includes any compliant hardware.
Finally, the installation of it into the vehicle meant that a power converter would be needed to run the power source for my design. A car will supply 12v of OC where as this device uses 240v of AC. I built what is known as an oscillator to increase the wave form factor of the 12v from the vehicle to make it 240v compliant.
The working model in the vehicle is installed and fully functional.
