Abstract

A paint tray which can be used either in a substantially vertical position while supported on a ladder or from scaffolding or in a horizontal position while in the hand or placed on a surface. Side walls, base and top walls define a chamber 1 with a single opening. The tray has a handle 3 disposed longitudinally on its top surface and hook shaped members 2 disposed on the base at the distal end of the tray for attaching the tray to a rung of a ladder or a length of scaffold pole. The hook-shaped members 2 also act as feet for supporting and raising the distal end of the tray when it is placed in a horizontal position on a surface. The interior of the tray has an open-ended compartment 5 for storing a paint brush. Brackets 4 which extend laterally beyond the side walls may be provided at the proximal end of the tray to stabilise the tray against the side rails of a ladder. A clip 6 may be provided to hold a paint roller within the tray.

HAND HELD PAINT CONTAINER

This invention relates to a paint container of the type that may be held in the hand, placed on a surface or attached to a structure such as a ladder or scaffolding.

Paint containers and trays are well known and in common usage, particularly when used in conjunction with paint roller applicators. The disadvantage of such paint containers and trays is that they are difficult to hold in the hand. It is also difficult to support or rest them on ladders and there is no provision to hold brushes and rollers whilst other tools are being used.

The object of this invention is to provide a paint container, which is easy to hold in a single hand, may be easily attached to ladders and has provision for holding a paint brush and a paint roller.

Accordingly, this invention provides a paint container with a handle, one or more supports for attaching to ladders, one or more brackets to support the container when attached to ladders and one or more feet or legs to support the container when placed on a surface.

Preferably the container is made of plastic material, a combination of plastic and metal materials or entirely from metal material. The container may also include one or more compartments for storing tools such as paint brushes and one or more hooks or clips for storing paint rollers.

The preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a front view of the container, looking down into the interior; FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the container when attached to the rungs of a ladder; FIGURE 3 shows a side view of the container when placed on a horizontal surface.

As shown in Figure 1, the container comprises a chamber 1 with one open side. Attached to the lower side is a hook 2 and to the opposite side of the hook 2 is a fixed handle 3. The hook 2 is used to hang the paint container from the rungs or a ladder, as shown in Figure 2. The hook also acts as a leg to support the container when place on a level surface as shown in Figure 3. The height of the leg is sufficient to stop paint from pouring out of the container when it is placed on a horizontal surface.

Two brackets 4 are mounted on the sides adjacent to the handle. The brackets 4 are sufficiently wide to bear upon the side rails of a ladder and act to restrain the container when it is attached to the rungs of ladders by the hook 2, as shown in Figure 2.

A compartment 5, shown in Figure 1, tapers from its mouth at the top to an opening at the bottom and is used to store one or more paint brushes. A clip 6, as shown in Figure 1, is used to hold a paint roller within the paint container.

Claims

1. A paint container including a handle and one or more supports to attach the container to a structure.

2. A paint container as claimed in Claim 1 where brackets restrain the container when

attached to a structure.

3. A paint container as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 with one or more legs or feet to hold the container so that paint does not escape from the open side of container when it is placed on a horizontal surface.

4. A paint tray as claimed in any preceding claim where a compartment, open at two opposite ends, is used to store one or more paint brushes.

5. A paint tray as claimed in any preceding claim with one or more supports to hold a paint roller.

6. A paint tray as claimed m any preceding claim that is made from metal or plastics material, or from a combination of these materials.

7. A paint tray substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
