Description
1 238635 1
A VEHICLE
The present invention relates to vehicles, in particular to a partition for a vehicle which can be moved from a first position to a second position for enhancing access to the 5 vehicle. An example of a use for such a partition is in a taxi by wheelchair bound individuals, who may find movement in and out of vehicles difficult. Specifically, the enhanced access to the vehicle allows wheelchair bound individuals to enter and leave the vehicle whilst remaining in their wheelchair and, whilst inside the vehicle, to sit in their wheelchair facing forwards.
At the present time, when a wheelchair bound individual wishes to enter a vehicle, there is significant effort required in entering between the vehicle door and finally being positioned in a seat within the vehicle. Often, wheelchair bound individuals will have to leave their wheelchair and be assisted by other persons into a seat in the vehicle.
15 Sometimes, it is possible that the wheelchair bound individual may be able to enter the vehicle whilst remaining in their wheelchair, particularly if there is a ramp that is deployable from the doorway to ground level external to the vehicle. However, in small vehicles such as cars and taxis, doorways are not generally large enough to allow such movement. A section of the vehicle's frame, which separates front and rear doorways of 20 the vehicle, is generally immovable and therefore hampers access for wheelchair bound persons through the doorways.
Present access systems for vehicles are often based on completely modified vehicle body shells, which are costly and difficult to manufacture. In turn, this means that vehicle 25 operators are not keen to install such systems, when often they may be used infrequently.
Therefore, wheelchair bound individuals are often put off using vehicles, such as taxis and buses, and may have to rely on other persons for carrying out daily tasks, which require travelling from one place to another.
30 Another problem with present systems is that large doorways may intrude on the space within a vehicle and often the removal of seats may be necessary. Again, this means that vehicle operators are not keen to install such systems.
Yet another problem associated with present systems is the necessity for one or more additional trained persons to deploy complex access systems. For vehicles in which there is only a single operator, this can be very time consuming and difficult, especially if the operator is not trained in handling wheelchair bound individuals.
Therefore, what is required is a simple, cost-effective access system for enabling a wheelchair bound individual to enter and leave a vehicle easily, which furthermore does not impair normal use of the vehicle.
10 In view of the foregoing and in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a vehicle adapted to carry a passenger in a wheelchair, the vehicle having a front compartment for a driver and a rear compartment for a passenger, wherein the front compartment and the rear compartment are divided by a partition, the partition being movable between a first position and a second position, such that access to the vehicle for a 15 person entering or leaving the vehicle is increased. Preferably, the first position is considered a normal position for when the vehicle is being driven.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the vehicle further comprises: a front door; and 20 a rear door, wherein, in the first position, both the front door and the rear door can latch to one end of the partition and, in the second position, both the front door and rear door are disengaged from said end of the partition. In another embodiment of the present invention, the front door and the rear door, when shut, latch just to the frame of the vehicle, such that 25 the partition is movable, even when the doors are closed.
Preferably, there is no section of frame (i.e. stanchion or B/C post or column) of the vehicle between the front door and rear door when in the second position. Thus, in the second position, there is no structural obstruction between the front compartment and the 30 rear compartment which could hinder access to the vehicle. Hence, access through one of the front or rear doors is increased.
Preferably, the front door is pivotally attached to the vehicle. Alternatively, the front door is slidably attached to the vehicle.
In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the rear door is pivotally 5 attached to the vehicle. In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the rear door is slidably attached to the vehicle.
Preferably, the front door and/or the rear door can slide or rotate horizontally.
10 In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the front door and/or the rear door can slide or rotate vertically.
In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the partition slides between the first position and the second position, thereby increasing the access to the rear 15 compartment. In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the partition slides rearwards from the first position to a third position, thereby increasing the access to the front compartment.
Preferably, a seat for the driver is attached to the partition. Additionally, one or 20 more deployable seats for passengers, which are normally stowed when not in use, are also attached to the partition.
Preferably, seat backs for the driver and passengers are attached to the partition.
25 Preferably, the partition comprises a section of clear screen.
Additionally, the partition may have additional latching means to hold it in a fixed position within the vehicle independently of the front or rear doors. Both the front and rear doors may latch to the end of the partition to lock the partition when in the first position.
In yet another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the vehicle comprises a pivot about which the partition can rotate between the first position and the second position.
Preferably, the pivot is a vertical pivot positioned centrally in the vehicle.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a ramp is deployable between a floor 5 surface in a doorway of the vehicle and ground external to the vehicle. In another embodiment of the invention, the front and/or rear door opens by rotating about a pivot in the floor of the vehicle, such that, when open, the door extends to ground level outside the vehicle and thereby acts as a ramp.
10 In another preferred embodiment of the present invention the partition andlor the ramp are/is moved manually.
In yet another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the partition and/or the ramp are/is automatically actuated.
Preferably the partition andior the ramp are/is actuated remotely.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a section of roof of the vehicle above the front door and/or the rear door can open, such that access to the vehicle for the person 20 entering or leaving the vehicle is increased further. In another embodiment of the present invention, the front door and/or rear door rotates about a pivot in the roof of the vehicle, such that the front door and/or rear door open and close vertically, thereby opening and closing a section of the roof of the vehicle such that headroom for the person entering or leaving the vehicle is increased.
Also, in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for increasing access to a vehicle adapted to carry a passenger in a wheelchair and having a front compartment for a driver and a rear compartment for a passenger, comprising moving a partition dividing the front compartment from the rear compartment between a first 30 position and a second position.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the step of moving the partition comprises sliding the partition between the first position and the second position.
In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the step of moving the partition comprises rotating the partition about a pivot between a first position and a second position.
Preferably, the pivot is a vertical pivot positioned centrally in the vehicle.
Preferably, the vehicle is a taxi.
10 A specific embodiment is now described, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a vehicle according to the present invention with a partition slid forward in a second position; Figure 2 shows the vehicle of figure 1 with the partition slid back in a first position; Figure 3 shows a view similar to that of figure 1, but wherein the vehicle has a slidable rear door; Figure 4 shows a view similar to that of figure 2, but wherein the vehicle has a slidable rear door; Figure S shows a second embodiment of a vehicle according to the present 25 invention with the partition rotated into a second position; Figure 6 shows the vehicle of figure 5 with the partition in a first position and not rotated; 30 Figure 7 shows a view similar to that of figure 5, but wherein the vehicle has a slidable rear door; and
Figure 8 shows a view similar to that of figure 6, but wherein the vehicle has a slidable rear door.
Referring to figure 1, a vehicle (10) adapted to carry a passenger (13) in a 5 wheelchair is shown with a partition (14) separating a front compartment (15a) from a rear compartment (15b). The partition has moved from a first position (11) to a second position (12a) by sliding forwards. A seat (15c) for a driver is fixed to the partition (14) and has also moved forward with the partition (14). Furthermore, one or more deployable seats (15e) for passengers, which are shown stowed away, are also attached to the partition. A 10 clear screen forms a section of the partition (14), so that the driver has visual view of the rear compartment (1 Sb).
A front door (18a) and a rear door (19a) are both pivotally mounted to the frame (lea) of the vehicle (10) and shown in open positions, in which they are unlatched from the 15 partition (14), thereby allowing the partition (14) to slide forward.
There is no section of frame (i.e. stanchion) of the vehicle between a front doorway (18b) and a rear doorway (19b). Therefore, forward movement of the partition (14) into the second position (12a) enlarges the rear doorway (19b), thereby enhancing the 20 accessibility of the rear compartment (15b) to the passenger (13) and wheelchair (13a).
A ramp (17) is shown deployed between the floor of the rear doorway (19b) and ground level outside the vehicle (10) so that a passenger (13) in a wheelchair (13a) can move easily into the vehicle (10) through the rear doorway (19b), whilst remaining seated 25 in their wheelchair (13a). The passenger (13) may move themselves manually into the vehicle (10), be assisted by another person, who may be the driver of the vehicle, or use a winch or lift device, which can be deployed with the ramp (17), and operated by the passenger (13), the driver of the vehicle or another person.
30 Any one or all of the partition (14), the ramp (17) or lift, the roof section and/or the winch or lift device can be moved manually or automatically. If moved automatically, actuation may take place remotely, for example from a driver's cab or by the passenger (13) at the front or rear door (18a, 19a).
Referring to figure 2, the vehicle (10) is shown with the partition (14) locked in the first position (11) with the front and rear doors (18a, 19a) shut. The front and rear doors (18a, 19a) are shown latched to the partition (14), thereby holding the partition (14) fixed 5 in the vehicle (10). Alternatively the front and rear doors (18a, 19a) latch just to the frame (lea) of the vehicle (10) and the partition (14) has additional latching means to hold it fixed. The driver's seat (lSc) is positioned in a normal position, such that a driver can access the seat and drive the vehicle (10).
10 The passenger (13) is seated in their wheelchair (13a) facing forwards in the vehicle (10). Seats (15d) in both the front and rear compartments (15a, 15b) may be retractable, such that the wheelchair (13a) can fit in the space of one of the seats (lSd) when required. The ramp (17) is stowed away, either as part of the floor of the vehicle (10) or underneath the floor of the vehicle (10). If required, the ramp (17) may also be 15 completely detachable from the vehicle (10) and stored separately.
Referring to figure 3, a vehicle (10) similar to that of figure 1 is shown with a slidable rear door (19a), which, when open, provides even greater accessibility to the rear compartment (15b) of the vehicle. The rear door (19a) is shown as sliding horizontally, 20 but could alternatively slide vertically.
Referring to figure 4, a vehicle (10) similar to that of figure 2 is shown with a slidable rear door (19a). The front door (18a) is shown latched to an end (14a) of the partition (14), thereby holding the partition in the first position (11).
Referring to figure 5, a second embodiment of a vehicle, in which the partition (14) can rotate about a pivot (20) from a first position (21) to a second position (22a) to increase the size of an opening in the rear doorway (19b), thereby increasing access to the rear compartment (15b) of the vehicle (10), is shown. Additionally, the partition (14) can rotate 30 to a third position (22b) to increase the size of an opening in the front doorway (18b), thereby increasing access to the front compartment (15a). The pivot (20) is normally centrally located within the vehicle (10) as shown. A fixed section (14c) of the partition is
fixed in the vehicle (10) and cannot rotate, such that the driver's seat (15c) will also be fixed in the vehicle (10) without the need for it to slide as in figure 1.
Referring to figure 6, the vehicle (10) is shown with a rotatable section (14d) of the 5 partition (14) locked in the first position (21) with the front and rear doors (18a, 19a) shut.
The front and rear doors (18a, 19a) are latched to the partition (14) to prevent the partition (14) from rotating.
Referring to figure 7, a vehicle (10) similar to that shown in figure 5 is shown with 10 a slidable rear door (19a).
Referring to figure 8, a vehicle (10) similar to that shown in figure 6 is shown with a slidable rear door (19a).
15 It will of course be understood that the present invention has been described above purely by way of example and modifications of detail can be made within the scope of the invention.
