Abstract
A smoke alarm having a switch allowing the normal function of the smoke alarm to be disabled and re-enabled. The disabled state may be indicated by a visual indicator and a momentary audible warning sounded at intervals. The switch may be a cord operated switch.

DESCRIPTION
SMOKE ALARM The invention relates to a battery powered domestic smoke alarm of the type that sounds an audible alarm when smoke is detected.
Such smoke alarms may be triggered by smoke caused through the normal cooking of food, particularly when grilling. In order to prevent or stop the alarm from sounding, a person may remove the battery from the smoke alarm when cooking. If the person forgets to re-install the battery, the occupants of the building are no longer protected by the smoke alarm.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient method to disable and reenable a smoke alarm and to provide an audible warning during the period the device is disabled such that it is difficult to forget to re-enable the device.
Accordingly, this invention provides a smoke alarm incorporating a cord-operated switch (similar to a cord-operated light switch used in many bathrooms) allowing the switch to be reached and operated by most adults.
The switch incorporates a visual indicator (Eg a green tab for ON, and a red tab for OFF). With the switch in its usual ON position, the smoke alarm functions normally.
When the switch is OFF, the smoke alarm circuit is disabled and an electronic timer circuit enabled. The timer circuit momentarily (Eg for one second) sounds an incorporated audible device (Eg a buzzer or the smoke alarms'existing audible device) at intervals (Eg every three minutes).
Claims (3)
- CLAIMS SMOKE ALARM 1. A smoke alarm incorporating a switch allowing the normal function of the smoke alarm to be disabled and re-enabled.
- 2. A smoke alarm as claimed in Claim 1 where the disabled state is indicated by a visual indicator and a momentary audible warning sounded at intervals.
- 3. A smoke alarm substantially as herein described above.
