Abstract

238,570. Cheshire, E. Aug. 16, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Platen presses. - Sheets are fed to platen presses by a rocking gripper arm 48. Figs. 1 and 3, from a pile resting on a support 31. the arm 31 being operated from the press by a rod 53 which is adjustably secured to a slot 50 in the arm, and is detachably connected to a socket 54 mounted on the pin f, which connects a crank-operated pitman d to the bed e. The feeding attachments shown are built into a press of the Gordon type, and are carried by two castings 20, 21 adjustably secured on extensions on the frame of the press. Between these extensions is secured a front plate 25 which serves as a girder, and also a guide for the front of the pile. By disconnecting the rod 53, the machine may be fed by hand without operation of the automatic feed. Sheet-separators.-The sheets are separated by suction separators 41, Fig. 3, adjustably mounted on a bar 33 carried by an arm on an oscillating shaft 35 which is oscillated by lever-and-link mechanism from a cam 40, Fig. 3, on a shaft 29 driven from the main gear wheel c of the press. Sheet-carriers; grippers.-The gripper members 65, 66, Fig. 13, are carried by hollow arms 59 adjustably secured to the channel-shaped part 58, Figs. 3 and 13, of a shaft mounted in the upper part of the oscillating arm 48. The outer members 66 of the grippers are fixed, and the inner members 65 are movable to close on the sheets and release the same. The members 65 are acted on by springs 67<a>, which tend to close the grippers, and the members 65 are controlled by levers 67 engaging the upper or lower parts of recesses 69 to open and close the grippers respectively, but capable of assuming an intermediate position in which the grippers are held closed by the springs 67<a> only. In this intermediate position the sheets are stripped from the grippers by the stops on the platen as the grippers move away from the sheet. The arms 67 are operated by arms 74 on a spring-controlled shaft 73 mounted in an arm 75 secured to the shaft 58. Through this arm 75, cooperating with a depending link 78 and a roller 79 engaged by a swinging cam 80, the grippers are moved to and from the platen, and are arranged to travel across the platen raised therefrom, and to be dropped towards it as the sheet is to be stripped from the grippers. Finally the grippers are raised from the platen by oscillating the cam 80 by mechanism controlled from the cam 30. The grippers are opened and closed by mechanism associated with the cam 80, and comprising a cam-plate 92, Fig. 1, which holds the grippers in their intermediate position while the sheets are taken by the platen. The shaft 73 is urged by a spring which normally keeps the grippers closed. On this shaft is an arm 88 to which is pivoted a link 89 pivoted to a link 97 on the swinging arm 48. On the pivot connecting the links 89, 97 is an arm which engages a cam-lug 98 to depress the arm 89 to actuate the shaft 73 to open the grippers to receive the separated sheet. The grippers then remain closed by the action of the spring on shaft 73, and the spring 67<a>. As the arm engages under cam-plate 92, the link 89 is raised and the grippers are closed by spring 67<a> only.
