Abstract
An ankle supporting shoe a which has a lateral strap of hook and loop tape b extending vertically towards the users calf. A corresponding strap of hook and loop tape c is adhered to the users calf with skin-adherent glue, preferably covering the lateral malleolus e, and the two straps are pressed together. The ankle supporting shoe may prevent eversion and increase proprioceptive awareness of the position and movement of the ankle. Preferably, the ankle supporting shoe is made of non-stretch materials.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
ANKLE-JOINT SUPPORT The invention relates to an ankle-joint support of the type which help brace and stabilize an ankle-joint at rest or in motion Such ankle-joint braces are common and widely used, but many are problematic for the user in that they bulky in form and do not provide the wearer with substantive physical proprioceptive feedback as to the potentially injury-causing movement of their ankle-joint.
Objectives of this invention are to help prevent biomechanical damage to the wearers ankle-joint by providing substantial physical support to that joint and physical proprioceptive stimulus to the wearer of impending potentially injury-causing movements of that ankle-joint.
Accordingly this invention provides a shoe with a velcro (RTM) strap securely fastened to its inside surface of the lateral sidewall with the mesh-bonding surface facing medially and in vertical alignment with the shoe wearers lateral malleolus; and a connective opposite-mesh strap of velcro (RTM) with skin-adhesive backing attached to the lateral surface of the wearers calf, with the velcro (RTM) mesh facing laterally.
Preferably the shoe and straps will be made of strong non-stretch types of material.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a lateral side view of the whole ankle-joint support unit Figure 2 shows a lateral side view of the wearers leg with adhesive velcro (RTM) attached Figure 3 shows a side view laterally of the shoe with velcro (RTM) strap attachment Figure 4 shows a rear view of the wearers leg with adhesive velcro (RTM) strap attached
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 5 shows a rear view of the whole ankle-joint support unit Figure 6 shows a cross-section in the horizontal plane at the level of mid-malleolus of the wearers leg Figure 7 shows a top view of the shoe section of the unit.
As shown in figure 2 and figure 4 the wearer has the skin-adhesive backed velcro (RTM) strap c attached covering the whole length of the calf lateral surface including the lateral malleolus e.
The wearers foot is then placed in the shoe figure 3 and with the wearers ankle-joint held in the anatomical neutral position d the velcro (RTM) straps b + c are pressed firmly together as in figure 1, figure 5 and figure 6.
Once the opposing faces of the velcro (RTM) straps have been securely enmeshed with each other the support provided to the wearers ankle-joint by the invention will decrease the potential for the ankle-joint to move into the eversion position, and also provide physical proprioceptive stimulus via the skin to warn the wearer of initiation of movement towards eversion.
Claims (4)
- CLAIMS 1. An ankle-joint support comprising of a shoe with lateral velcro (RTM) strap attached which in turn locked onto a corresponding velcro (RTM) strap adhering to the users leg on the lateral surface.
- 2. An ankle-joint support as claimed in claim 1. where the support helps to prevent movement of the ankle joint into eversion.
- 3. An ankle-joint support as claimed in claim 1. and claim 2. where the skin adherence of the support enables increased physical proprioceptive awareness of the ankle-joints position and movement on the part of the wearer.
- 4. An ankle-joint support as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2. which is constructed of nonstretch materials.
