Abstract

A hydraulic cylinder protector 3 slides along a track way 1 that is attached to a hydraulic cylinder 2 and is drawn out by the piston rod 5 by a fixture to the ram eye (4). The protector is made of fabricated steel section and the arrangement may be retro-fitted to the cylinder to protect the rod from impact.

Description

1 2385379;
HYDRAULIC CYLINDER PROlECrOR This invention relates to a guard of the type that would be fitted to an hydraulic cylinder for the purpose of protecting the vulnerable areas of the cylinder rod, whereby the operation of the controlling hydraulic system would allow the guard to move in conjunction with the cylinder rod, covering the areas that are likely to be damaged by impaction of foreign bodies.
Such protectors are well known, but are designed such that they are not permanently attached to the cylinder and only supported at the extents of the cylinder travel.
An object of this invention is to provide a permanent protector that is supported along its full length, regardless of the position of the cylinder rod.
Accordingly, this invention provides an hydraulic cylinder protector including an interlocking track and slider with the track being permanently attached to the body of the cylinder and the slider being permanently fixed at one end to the rod eye of the cylinder, so that the slider will move up and down the track as the hydraulic cylinder rod extends and retracts.
The protector is made from steel and can be made in various lengths and cross-sections to suit different sized cylinders and applications.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE shows a side view of the protector, fitted to an hydraulic cylinder, in the fully retracted position.
FIGURE 2 shows a side view of the protector, fitted to an hydraulic cylinder, in the fully extended position.
FIGURE 3 shows a cross-section of the protector, fated to an hydraulic cylinder.
As shown in Figure 1, the protector comprises a track 1, permanently attached to an hydraulic cylinder 2. A slider 3 is interlocked with the track 1, with one end permanently attached to the cylinder rod eye 4.
Figure 2 shows that as the hydraulic cylinder 2 is extended, the slider 3 moves with it along the track 1, covering the cylinder rod 5.
As shown in Figure 3, the slider 3 is interlocked with the track 1. Contained within, and permanently attached to the slider 3, is rail 6. The contact between rail 6, slider 3 and track 1 provides support at any position of the travel of cylinder 2.

Claims (8)

1. A hydraulic cylinder protector of heavy duty fabricated steel section fitted to a hydraulic cylinder for the purpose of protecting the vulnerable areas of the cylinder rod, from any accidental or misuse force that could be exerted by impact in any working situation, whereby the operation of the controlling hydraulic system would allow the guard to move in conjunction With the ram hod, covering the areas that are likely to be damaged by impaction of foreign bodies.
2. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim 1, is actuated by the normal operation of the hydraulic cylinder.
3. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim i, protects the ram proportionally to the extension of the ramrod.
4. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim 1, is fully supported in its overall length by a sliding track way fixed to the body of the cylinder
5. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim i, can be retro fitted to the hydraulic cylinder with no need to dismantle any part of the associated machine or hydraulic cylinders.
6. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim 1, has a slider mechanism, which is drawn out by a fixture permanently attached to the ram eye.
7. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim 1, r:eeds no lubrication.
8. The hydraulic cylinder protector, as described in claim 1, needs no adjustment.
