Abstract

A handhold 2 on a windsurfing boom 3 is orientated with respect to the boom such that in use the sailor's hand 4, wrist 5 and forearm 6 are in straight alignment when holding the boom in the sailing posture. The line of the boom may be adapted to form a handhold ( 1, Fig 1) or a handhold may be permanently or removably attached to the boom. Where a handhold is attached to the boom, the handhold may be attached at various points along the boom, while the orientation of the handhold with respect to the boom may be altered to fit an individual sailor by fitting one of a range of handholds that each provide different orientations. The handhold allows for more comfortable sailing.

Description

HANDHOLD ON A BOOM FOR CONTROL OF A SAIL This invention relates to a boom used to control a windsurfing sail.
Windsurfing sails are rigged on a mast and boom. The boom commonly is of a wishbone type, extending from the mast to the clew of the sail. The boom is held by the sailor, so allowing control of the sail.
According to the present invention there is provided one or more handholds on each limb of the boom, orientated so that the hand is positioned in straight alignment with the wrist and forearm when holding the boom at that point, when in the sailing posture.
Two specific embodiments of the invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which :- Figure 1 shows the mast, sail and one limb of the boom, with two alternative handholds for the sailor's forward hand provided on the boom; Figure 2 shows a handhold formed by adapting the shape of the boom; Figure 3 shows a handhold attached to the boom.
Referring to the drawing, the boom 3 is provided with a handhold 1 for the sailor's forward hand 4. Handhold 1 is formed by adapting the line of the boom 3 to orientate the hand 4 in straight alignment with the wrist 5 and forearm 6, when the sailor holds the boom 3 at this point. A second handhold 2 is also shown by way of example of this invention, this handhold 2 is formed by attaching a handhold 2 to the boom 3, to orientate the sailor's forward hand 4 in straight alignment with the wrist 5 and forearm 6 when in the sailing posture.
One or more handholds. l & 2 may be provided at any point along either limb of the boom 3, orientated to provide the straight hand 4-wrist 5-forearm 6 alignment. Handholds 1 & 2 may be provided for one or both of the sailor's hands 4.
The handhold 2 may be permanently fastened to the boom 3. This handhold 2 may also be fastened to the boom 3 by a fitting that allows for removal and reattachment, at various points along the boom 3. Figure 3 shows the handhold 2 attached to the boom 3 with a tightened band 7.
