Abstract
The handle bar is attached to a vertical shaft via a friction coupling to allow rotation about the shaft for storage or if the bicycle falls to the ground after an accident.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
The Description. Cycle Safety Handle Bar.
The invention relates to a bicycle handle bar, the type of which turns through 180 degrees when impacted with the ground, thus preventing the likelihood of body or abdominal injury to the rider. Without the invention fitted, the bicycle handle bars remain upright when the bicycle falls to the ground, leaving the rider vulnerable to injury when in contact with them.
The handle bar would lie flat on the ground when the bicycle was lying flat on the ground (after an impact or accident).
Hence the invention provides the cycle with a rotating safety handle bar also able to reduce the amount of space required to store the cycle.
The invention consists of a friction coupling located between the cycle front forks upright and the handle bars. Various types of friction coupling design could be used. A preferred type of friction coupling would be a spring loaded cam, located in a seat to give fixed operation of the handle bars until impacted by an accident or manually turned with force. The spring loaded cam located in a seat offers sufficient friction to enable the handle bar to steer the bicycle front wheel under normal conditions, but insufficient friction to prevent the bars turning on impact with the ground.
The amount of friction can be fine tuned by using different spring pressures or cam angles. The invention would be made of hard material such as metal or plastic.
The invention could also be applied in the same way to motor cycles, and also be fitted as an after market application.
A preferred example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the bicycle with the handle bars'a'in the normal position.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the bicycle with the handle bars'a'manually turned through 180 degrees to reduce storage space or prevent injury during an accident or fall.
Figure 3 shows a front view of the bicycle and the location of the friction coupling *b'.
