Abstract
A bulb holder 1 comprises a holder body 2; connection means 6 to connect one end of the holder body to a support or supply cable; a socket 3 to receive a light bulb; and a switch 8 to operate the light bulb, said switch being controlled by reciprocal up and down movement of a sleeve 10 on the holder body. The bulb holder is easier to switch on and off as compared with a conventional switched bulb holder operated by a sliding bar.

TITLE
Bulb Holder DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a bulb holder.
Bulb holders for standing lamps, such as table lamps and standard lamps, are well known and normally consist of a holder body having one end secured to the lamp base and the other end having a socket to receive the contacts of a light bulb. On the base is a switch which often is a shaft which slides horizontally through the holder body. Sometimes it is difficult to locate the switch to turn the light on or off, as it can be awkward to feel for the switch under a lampshade or in the dark. Also the switch can be unattractive if visible.
The invention seeks to provide a bulb holder which is easier to switch on and off.
According to the present invention there is provided a bulb holder comprising : a holder body ; connection means to connect one end of the holder body to a support or supply cable ; a socket to receive a light bulb ; and a switch to operate the light bulb, said switch being controlled by reciprocal up and down movement of a sleeve on the holder body.
Preferably the sleeve is biased towards the socket by a spring. Preferably alternate down and up movement of the sleeve turns the switch on and off respectively.
The holder body may include a cylindrical section on which the sleeve slides, and preferably the sleeve is annular. The annular sleeve may include an internal bar spanning the diameter of the sleeve which slides in slots in opposing sides of the cylindrical section of the holder body, said bar operating the switch.
The connection means may be arranged for connecting the holder body to a lamp base (such as a table lamp or standard lamp base), and/or for connecting the holder body to a wall, ceiling or the like as a batten holder, and/or for gripping an electrical supply cable for the bulb holder to form a pendant holder.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which : Figure 1A shows a side view of a bulb holder ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 1B shows a side view of a bulb holder with a sleeve moved down; and Figure 2 shows a cross section view of the bulb holder.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a bulb holder 1. Bulb holder 1 has a holder body 2 having a socket 3 to receive a light bulb 4. An annular internally-threaded collar 5 screws onto the body to abut against shoulder 2A and may be used to secure a lampshade (not shown) to the bulb holder. A connection means in the form of projection 6 may be used to connect the bulb holder body to a lamp base (not shown).
Socket 3 has contacts 3A, 3B providing an electrical connection to the bulb 4. Contacts 3A, 3B are connected to mains electricity through wire 7 via a latching push button switch 8 with a reciprocating button 8A, such that one press of the button 8A turns the switch 8 on and the next press turns it off.
Body 2 has a cylindrical section 2B with two vertical slots 9A, 9B on opposing sides of the cylindrical section 2B. An annular sleeve 10 is mounted on cylindrical section 2B for reciprocal movement up and down the cylindrical section 2B. A spring 11 acts between an annular shoulder 10A in sleeve 10 and annular shoulder 2C on body 2 to bias the sleeve 10 up towards the socket 3. Sleeve 10 includes an internal bar 12 spanning the diameter of the sleeve which slides in slots 9A, 9B.
In use as the sleeve is reciprocated downwards to the position shown in Figure IB, bar 12 engages the button 8A to turn the switch 8 on. The sleeve is then allowed to return to the up position due to the spring 11 to the position shown in Figure 1A. If the sleeve is moved downwards again the bar will again engage button 8A to turn the switch off. Alternate down and up movement of the sleeve thus turns the switch 8 on and off respectively.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
For example the sleeve 10 could turn the light on and off by means other than a push button switch.
The bulb holder described above is suitable for use with a table lamp or standard lamp.
However, instead of the projection 6, a mounting flange may be provided for mounting the bulb holder on a wall or ceiling, so that the bulb holder takes the form of a batten holder.
Alternatively, instead of the projection 6, a cable grip may be provided for gripping the wires 7, so that the bulb holder takes the form of a pendant holder.

Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
