Abstract
238,384. Electric Control, Ltd., and Gilson, W. J. Sept. 5, 1924. High potential switches; automatic circuit-breakers; are-rupturing devices.-Air-break switches having contacts supported upon insulators are constructed so that the insulating supports are subjected only to forces of compression and tension during the operation of the switch, and the contact-making arms are symmetrically arranged about the axis of operation. As shown in Fig. 1, the movable switch arms D are pivotally mounted at 3 on a supporting insulator B which is made bored axially to accommodate the vertically movable operating rod E. A spring C encircling this rod forces the switch to the " off " position when the remaining catch 7 is released by the electromagnet 8 or by hand. The switch is closed by a manually-operated lever 5 having a pin-and-slot connection with the rod E. The fixed contacts 4 are similarly mounted on supporting insulators B<1> and are provided with arcing horns C, a suitable horn C being mounted on the central insulator. Three similar switches are used for controlling a three-phase circuit. In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, two insulators B<2> support the horizontal axes 3 for the switch blades D, the operating rod E passing downwards between them. The arm E which is formed partially of insulating material is connected to the switch blades by a link. An overhead solenoid 11 consisting of a series coil in the high-voltage main circuit operates the retaining catch bv a trip rod 12. The switch blades are provided with moving arc horns C<2>.
