Abstract

A playing piece for a board game comprises a body 5 with indicia 6 on the upper surface 3. A cover 2 hides the indicia during play. The indicia may be changed by turning the top cover. The base of the piece may be slotted into or onto a board, so that the body of the piece does not move when the cover is turned. Symbols or characters may also be applied to the body of the piece.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
PLAYING PIECE FOR A BOARD GAME This invention relates to a playing piece for a board game of the purist style having no ingredient of chance.
In the majority of such games play is by tactical manoeuvre of the playing pieces to different positions on a board but an object of this invention is to provide a playing piece which may not only be manoeuvred by the player but which also has an identity which may be altered without changing the position of the piece.
Accordingly this invention provides a playing piece with a top-mark concealed by a cover which can be turned to rotate the mark to different alignments in a horizontal plane yet which is readily removable to reveal the mark, the body of the piece having a base which can be slotted onto or into a board in such manner that the body does not move during rotation of the mark.
The piece may be made from plastics, metal or wood or a combination of those materials.
Two preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a three dimensional view of the playing piece.
FIGURE 2 shows a three dimensional view of the piece with the cover removed.
FIGURE 3 shows four plans of Figure 2 viewed from above.
FIGURE 4 shows a three dimensional view of the component parts of the piece.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
FIGURE 5 is a three dimensional view of alternative component parts for the piece FIGURE 6 shows a vertical section and plans of the piece with the component parts of Figure 4 assembled.
FIGURE 7 shows a vertical section and plans of the piece with the component parts of Figure 5 assembled.
As shown in the drawings the piece is comprised of a cubiform body 5 surmounted by a removable cover 2 which, when removed, as shown in Figure 2, reveals an identity head 3 having, in this example, a top-mark of two different spots 6 recessed into its upper surface. The drawn examples show a disc 9 fixed to one vertical face of the body and Figure 3 shows four different alignments of the top-mark in relation to that side of the body which are obtained by respective 90 degree clockwise rotations of the identity head. Other characters or symbols may be applied to the body to provide further variations of play.
The identity head is attached to the body of the piece by a bearing arrangement which allows the identity head to be turned, by rotation in a horizontal plane, to any of the alignment positions shown in Figure 3 and remain at rest, between rotations, in the position to which it was last turned. Two examples of a bearing arrangement are shown in Figure 4 with Figure 6 and Figure 5 with Figure 7.
In the example of Figure 4 with Figure 6 the identity head is uniformly recessed with a compression fit over a resilient plastic collar 4 surrounding a bearing pin 1 which is fixed centrally to the top of the body of the piece.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
In the example of Figure 5 with Figure 7 the bearing pin is a permanent cylindrical magnet 7 fixed centrally to the top of the body of the piece and the identity head is recessed with a uniform sliding fit over the pin. A mild steel disc 8 is fixed to the base of the recess so that the bearing arrangement is obtained by magnetic attraction.
In both the above bearing arrangements the identity head is of low friction material and the relative depth of the bearing pin is sufficient to support the identity head with a small clearance above the body so that rotation causes no frictional wear between those parts.
The cover 2 has a uniform sliding fit over the identity head and is also preferably of low motion material so that it may be readily removed when play requires the topmark to be revealed, a pin-hole, not shown, drilled centrally through the top of the cover, will relieve any tendency to vacuum retention during removal. When the cover is in position, as shown in Figures 1,6 and 7, the cover may be turned to rotate the identity head as well as used to conceal the top-mark. The covers may be coloured so that each player's pieces may have covers of a different colour to those of his opponents.
Figures 4 and 6 show a body having a solid base for slotting with a uniform sliding fit into a cubiform slot on a board whilst Figures 5 and 7 show a body of hollow box section for slotting with a uniform sliding fit over a cubiform lug fixed to a board.
The bodies should preferably be of low friction material so that the piece may be readily removed from a slot or lug and re-positioned on another slot or lug on a board having a number of such slots or lugs.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A playing piece with a top-mark concealed by a cover which can be turned to rotate the mark to different alignments in a horizontal plane yet which is readily removable to reveal the mark, the body of the piece having a base which can be slotted onto or into a board in such manner that the body does not move during rotation of the mark
  2. 2. A playing piece as described in Claim 1, having an identity head onto the top of which any chosen pattern of top-mark may be applied.
  3. 3. A playing piece as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2, having an identity head which is attached to the body of the piece by a bearing arrangement which allows the head to be turned by rotation in a horizontal plane and yet remain at rest, between rotations, in the position to which it was last turned.
  4. 4. A playing piece as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein any chosen symbols or characters may be also applied to the body of the piece.
    S. A playing piece substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-7 on sheets 1/2 and 2/2 of the accompanying drawings.
