Abstract
An alarm comprises a vibration sensor and a cellular telephone which establishes a connection with a remote telephone receiver upon receipt of a signal from the vibration sensor. The call made by the cellular telephone alerts the user to unauthorised interference with their property attached to or surrounding the alarm. This may be achieved by attaching a magnet to the device so that it may be affixed to a magnetic material to be protected. An enhanced microphone and speaker permits the user to hear the events at the alarm and act accordingly. A delay may be introduced between arming of device and triggering the alarm and before the cellular telephone dials the remote telephone.

TITLE Alarm DESCRIPTION The invention relates to alarms for the protection of property from interference by unauthorised persons.
The invention provides an alarm comprising a vibration sensor, a cellular telephone programmable to establish an audio connection with a remote telephone receiver following receipt of a signal from the vibration sensor, and means for activating and deactivating the alarm.
The alarm of the invention may be placed on or in the article which it is desired to protect. For example, it may be placed in a vehicle. A secure place in a vehicle, such as a glove box, would be preferable. In another example, it may be placed on the inside of a door in a building. Means may be provided for securing it to the article to be protected. Such means may include a magnetic strip on the back of the alarm by means of which it may be attached to a magnetically permeable article to be protected.
The vibration sensor will operate on movement to send a signal to the cellular telephone. The signal causes the telephone to dial the remote telephone receiver, alerting the person answering the call at the remote telephone receiver to the unauthorised interference with his property. There is preferably a short period between the receipt of the signal from the vibration sensor by the cellular telephone and the effecting of the dialling.
This will enable the authorised user, disturbing his property upon return to it, to switch off the alarm before it connects to the remote telephone receiver. A 30 second period would be suitable, although other periods could be chosen. A delay function on activation of the alarm is also desirable, allowing the authorised user to switch on

the alarm and leave the vicinity before it becomes active. A 30 second delay would be suitable, although other times could be chosen.
The remote telephone receiver may be any suitable instrument, either connected to a land line or another cellular telephone. Preferably the cellular telephone of the alarm is re-programmable, so that the user may enter the number of any suitable telephone on which he may be contacted.
The cellular telephone of the alarm preferably includes an enhanced microphone and speaker. A microphone of sufficient sensitivity to transmit sounds from the near vicinity of the alarm, for example within 5 metres of the alarm, will enable the person answering the call at the remote telephone receiver to hear what is happening in the vicinity of his alarmed property. He may then decide what action is appropriate, whether to call the police, to approach the unauthorised interferer or simply to observe and gather evidence. If a speaker of sufficient power for speech from the remote telephone receiver to be heard by persons in the near vicinity of the alarm, for example within 5 metres of the alarm, is installed this will give the person answering the call at the remote telephone receiver the further option of speaking directly to any unauthorised interferer to deter him.
If the protected article is stolen, it will be possible to trace it through the cellular telephone network.
Claims (8)
- CLAIMS 1. An alarm comprising a vibration sensor, a cellular telephone programmable to establish an audio connection with a remote telephone receiver following receipt of a signal from the vibration sensor, and means for activating and deactivating the alarm.
- 2. An alarm according to claim 1 in which the cellular telephone is reprogrammable to establish an audio connection with another remote telephone receiver.
- 3. An alarm according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the means for activating the alarm includes a delay function.
- 4. An alarm according to any preceding claim in which the establishment of an audio connection with a remote telephone receiver is effected after a pre-determined interval from receipt of the signal from the vibration sensor.
- 5. An alarm according to any preceding claim in which the cellular telephone includes a microphone of sufficient sensitivity to transmit sounds from the near vicinity of the alarm.
- 6. An alarm according to any preceding claim in which the cellular telephone includes a speaker of sufficient power for speech from the remote telephone receiver to be heard by persons in the near vicinity of the alarm.
- 7. An alarm according to any preceding claim further comprising means for attachment to an article to be protected.
- 8. An alarm according to claim 7 in which the means for attachment comprise a magnet and the article to be protected is magnetically permeable.
