Abstract
A diskette securing device comprises a sheet 7 of flexible material having defined therein a head portion 3 whose width is greater than the diameter of the central hole of the diskette. Extending from the head portion is a neck portion 5 whose width is less than the diameter of the central hole of the diskette. With the sheet located on one side of the diskette, the head portion may be pushed through the central hole to be located on the other side of the diskette, the head portion then impeding relative movement of the diskette and the sheet.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
SECURING DEVICE FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a diskette securing device.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Jewel cases are currently employed by the music industry for the storage of compact discs. These cases typically consist of a transparent plastic shell with a front portion hingeably connected to a back portion. A snap in plastic tray fits into the back portion, impinging on the outside edge thereof. The plastic tray is provided with a circular depression which is sized to receive a standard 3. 5" diskette. The centre of this depressed region is marked by an upright or'jewel'member which protrudes upwardly by a height which corresponds to the depth of the depression. This upright member is sized so as to correspond to the central hole in the middle of a standard diskette.
When the diskette is to be stored it is placed into the circular depression of the tray with its'central hole positioned directly above the jewel member. Placing the index and middle finger on that portion of the disc which immediately surrounds the central hole and on either side thereof, gentle downward pressure is applied to secure the diskette into firm engagement with the plastic tray.
I The main problem with the jewel CD case is that it is extremely fragile and prone to cracking or breaking if dropped. In an attempt to address this problem, distributors of the jewel CD case recommend over ordering by 5% to insure against the possibility of breakage. This introduces a certain element of wastage which is wholly undesirable, especially from an economic point of view. Economic inefficiencies are exacerbated and are an inevitable consequence of a multi-part structure which necessitates additional components and costly finishing techniques.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
There is a need for a cheap packaging and display alternative to the jewel case. In an attempt to address this problem the CD'pocket'was designed. A diskette to be stored is placed within a transparent envelope of plastics material with a reusable flap.
The disadvantage of this solution is the absence of a securing device with which to retain the CD in place. The CD'pocket'also uses relatively large amounts of material.
STATEMENTS OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided a diskette securing device comprising a sheet of flexible material having defined therein a head portion whose width is greater than the diameter of the central hole of the diskette and, extending from the head portion, a neck portion whose width is less than the diameter of the central hole of the diskette, whereby, with the sheet located on one side of the diskette, the head portion may be pushed through the central hole to be located on the other side of the diskette, the head portion then impeding relative movement of the diskette and the sheet.
Preferably the head and neck portion are defined by a slit located in the body of the sheet. This provides for ease of construction and minimal production costs. Alternatively the head and neck portions are defined by the periphery of the sheet. In this case the securing device forms a tab feature which is independent of the diskette storage medium but can be attached thereto.
Preferably the sheet has located therein a shoulder portion on the opposite side of the neck portion to the head portion, said shoulder portion further impeding relative movement of the diskette and the sheet.
Preferably the neck portion is defined by two opposed chevron-shaped elements. This gives rise to two claw or'hook-like'elements which serve to grasp the disc on

either side of its central hole and impede relative movement of the diskette and the sheet.
Preferably the sheet is formed of polypropylene which is easily deformed upon the application of gentle finger pressure.
The device of the present invention may be in the form of a polypropylene sheet which is folded in half around a diskette to be stored and is hereinafter referred to as a'CD wrap'. The device will flat pack prior to and after intended use and provides for a robust packaging system which can be dropped without cracking or breaking, unlike the jewel case.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying diagrams.
As shown in Figure 1 a diskette securing device according to the present invention comprises a head portion 3 and neck portion 5 which are defined by a slit located in the body of a sheet of polypropylene 7. This provides the advantage of simple construction from one piece of sheet material with no requirement for extra components or costly finishing techniques. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the head and neck portion are defined by the periphery of the sheet and the securing device is defined by a tab member. This tab member is then attached to the medium in which a diskette is to be stored.
Neck portion 5 is defined by two opposed chevron-shaped elements. This feature gives rise to two'claw'or'hook-like'elements 9. Shoulder portion 11 is located on the opposite side of the neck portion to the head portion.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
As shown in Figure 2 the sheet of polypropylene 7 is folded in half around the disc to be stored, thus forming a protective shell with front and rear covering faces; 13 and
15 respectively. Accordingly the sheet of polypropylene has a width of at least the diameter of the disc which is to be stored and a length of at least twice this measurement.
A standard 3. 5' diskette has a diameter of 12cm. Accordingly the minimum size of a polyproplyene sheet for use with a standard diskette will be 12 cm by 24 cm. In the this embodiment sheet 7 has a width of 13.6 cm and a length of 27. 2 cm.
The polypropylene sheet can be of a range of different colours designed with high impact styling for contemporary aesthetic appeal.
As shown in Figure 3, the securing device is centrally located within rear covering face 15 of polypropylene sheet 7.
When in use the central hole of the diskette to be stored is positioned over the securing device located in the rear covering face 15. Using finger pressure, the head portion 3 of the device is pushed upwardly from behind sheet 7 and through the central hole of the diskette. The width of each the head 3 and shoulder portion 11 is 1.7 cm which exceeds the 1.5 cm diameter of the central hole in a standard 3.5' diskette. Accordingly the head portion 3 of the securing device extends over that part of the diskette immediately surrounding the central hole.
Neck portion 5 has a width of 1.4 cm which is less than the diameter of the central
hole of the diskette and is defined by two opposed chevron-shaped elements 9. Each 'claw'or'hook-like'element 9 serves to grasp the disc on either side of the central hole. Relative movement of the diskette and the sheet is therefore impeded by the impingement of the edges of the central hole of the diskette upon this neck region.
Consequently the disc to be stored is firmly retained in position.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
The rear covering face of sheet 7 is also provided with a slit 17 which partially extends along the circumference of the secured diskette.
In order to close the'CD-wrap', the front covering face is folded over, sandwiching the diskette between the front and rear covering faces. Tab feature 19 which projects outwardly by 2.3 cm from rear covering face 15 is fed through slit 17, thus forming a flap which is positioned over the upward face of the diskette. Three further slits 21, 23 and 25 are arranged in the front covering face of sheet 7, each located at a position which corresponds to the circumference of the underlying diskette which is now secured to the securing device of the rear covering face.
The flap formed by tab feature 19 is fed through slit 21 thus closing the'CD-wrap' around the diskette to be stored. The outer edge of the secured diskette are inserted into each slit 23 and 25, thus causing the outermost edges of the diskette to protrude though the front covering face.
When the disc is to be released from the securing device, the'CD-wrap'is opened by releasing tab 19 from slit 21. In order to facilitate the user, front covering face 13 is provided with a cut-out feature 27. Placing gentle thumb pressure upon the closure device at this region serves to release tab 19 which slides through slit 21.
Using gentle finger pressure the head portion 3 of the securing device is then pushed back through the central hole of the disc causing the head portion to resume its original position on the opposite side of the disc. The disc is now released and free for use.
