Abstract

A method of operating a mobile phone system comprises setting up a temporary block flow (TBF) between a mobile station (2) and a base station system on a network (1); communicating between the mobile station and the base station system and sending a radio link control (RLC) data block from the base station system to the mobile station. An RLC header satisfies a first predefined set of criteria, which permit transfer of the data in the RLC data block to the mobile station, a timer (3) in the mobile station is reset on receipt of the data and a timer (4) in the base station system is set when all the data has been transferred. Subsequent RLC data blocks are sent in which the RLC header satisfies a second predefined set of criteria which do not permit transfer of data therein and the timer (3) in the mobile station is reset on receipt of the subsequent block. Upon expiry of the timer (4) in the base station system a final RLC data block is sent in which the RLC header satisfies a third predefined set of criteria, such that the timer (3) in the mobile station is not reset and the logical link is disconnected.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
METHOD OF OPERATING A MOBILE PHONE SYSTEM This invention relates to a method of operating a mobile phone system.
The current release of GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) is a system which involves three layers of communication, a link layer control (LLC) between a mobile and a core network which carries data in LLC Protocol Data Units (PDUs), a Radio Link Control (RLC) between a mobile and a base station system (BSS), and a physical layer where data is encoded. When a logical link (TBFTemporary Block Flow) is set up between the mobile and the base station, it is held for a fixed period of time after data has been transferred and then released immediately after the data transfer is complete. In lu. node. with delayed release, the network is able to transfer more downlink data without having to set up a new TBF. To prevent the link from disconnecting itself, a delay mechanism has been provided, in which data is sent through the layers of the receiving mobile's protocol stack from the physical layer to the LLC. In the RLC layer, the timer is reset each time a data package is received by the mobile, but when it reaches the LLC, a deliberately corrupt field is recognised and the data is discarded. lu mode is a designation used in GERAN release 5 to indicate the use of the lu interface between the Radio Access Network (RAN) and the Core Network (CN). In previous releases, the RAN used the A/Gb interface to connect to the CN, and the change is a significant one requiring changes to a large amount of the protocol stack (e. g. the removal of the LLC protocol layer). This is the reason why delayed TBF procedures have to be redefined.
The next release of GERAN does not have an LLC layer and so the current delay method cannot be transferred directly. However, it is desirable to apply a delay to maintain a TBF until it is positively instructed to disconnect. This is particularly applicable to web browsing from a mobile terminal which has a"bursty"traffic profile due to the request/response nature of the hypertext transfer protocol (http). The request and download of a web page are both carried across TBFs and after the data has been delivered to its destination, the downlink TBF is no longer required. However, this creates a large amount of signalling to set up and release the TBF for each http request.
In accordance with the present invention, a method of operating a mobile phone system comprises setting up a temporary block flow (TBF) between a mobile station and a base station system on a network; communicating between the mobile station and
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
the base station system; sending a radio link control (RLC) data block from the base station system to the mobile station; wherein an RLC header satisfies a first predefined set of criteria; which permit transfer of the data in the RLC data block to the mobile station; resetting a timer in the mobile station on receipt of the data; setting a timer in the base station system when all the data has been transferred; sending subsequent RLC data blocks; wherein the RLC header satisfies a second predefined set of criteria; which do not permit transfer of data therein; resetting the timer in the mobile station on receipt of the subsequent block; upon expiry of the timer in the base station system, sending a final RLC data block; wherein the RLC header satisfies a third predefined set of criteria; such that the timer in the mobile station is not reset and the TBF is disconnected.
Preferably, the first predefined set of criteria are any which allow transfer of the data contained in an RLC data block to a higher layer.
Preferably, the second predefined set of criteria are that the M, E and FBI bits in the RLC data block header are all set to 0.
This causes the mobile to reset the timer and discard the RLC data block. This RLC data block is sent from the network to the mobile to prevent expiry of the timer.
Preferably, the third predefined set of criteria are that the M and E bits are set to 0 and the FBI bit is set to 1.
This causes the mobile to stop the timer and begin the TBF release procedure.
This RLC data block is sent from the network to the mobile station upon expiry of timer.
Preferably, the method is applied to general packet radio services (GPRS) coding schemes.
The present invention enables a delayed TBF to be supported for GPRS in lu mode.
An example of the method according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :- Figure 1 illustrates an example of communication between a mobile and a network, using the method of the present invention; and, Figure 2 illustrates an RLC data block in detail.
Figure 1 illustrates how the method of the present invention operates. On one 0 side is a network 1 which incorporates one or more base stations (not shown). On the
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
other side is a mobile station 2 of interest. Data to be downloaded from the network to a mobile station is transferred via a logical link (TBF). A link is set up in response to a request from the base station. In a downlink RLC data block as shown in Fig. 2, M/E bits are used in release 4 and earlier of GERAN to delimit LLC PDU's, and an equivalent mechanism is assumed to be required in release 5 for higher layer protocols.
Octets 1-3 comprise the RLC data block header. In earlier releases the M/E bit combination of 00 is reserved and it is assumed that this will also be the case for release 5.
A first timer 3 in the mobile station maintains the link for a fixed period. To prevent the timer 3 from expiring, the network periodically polls the mobile station with dummy RLC data blocks. When the last RLC data block containing data has been sent to the mobile station, the network starts a second timer 4. For the duration of this timer, the network sends dummy RLC data blocks with the final bit indicator (FBI) set to 0, whenever necessary to prevent the mobile station timer from expiring. These dummy RLC data blocks are encoded as follows: M/E bits set to 00 FBI set to 0 or 1 All other values encoded as normal.
The mobile station reads the M/E and FBI bits and interprets a received block as a dummy RLC block. If the FBI has a value of 0, the mobile station resets the T3190 timer 3 and discards the content of the block. The only other action is to respond with packet uplink Ack/Nacks in RLC acknowledged mode. If the mobile station receives a dummy RLC block with the FBI set to 1, then it initiates a TBF release mechanism and the link is broken.
Before any dummy RLC block is sent, any previous transmission of a higher layer PDU is completed using conventional mechanisms. The dummy RLC blocks and final dummy RLC block both contain data comprising filling octets set to hex value 2B.
