Abstract
To eliminate transmission latency due to the header of an IP packet, ATM cell or Ethernet frame, the header of the packet or frame is transmitted a set time before the data to be transmitted in the body of the packet or cell is due to be available for transmission, the set time corresponding precisely to the header transmission time. The packet data may comprise PCM voice information, or video data.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
ELIMINATING LATENCY INTRODUCED BY IP PACKET/ATM CELL/ETHERNET FRAME (etc..) HEADER IN TRANSMITTING PERIODIC DATA OVER THE INTERNET PCM Audio data ! Movies Frames/Process Control signal samples are time periodic hence very predictable. Transmitting the above periodic data samples over the Internet requires the data be sent as eg IP Packets/ATM Cellls/Ethernet frames etc.
At present the periodic sampled data is thus encapsulated, at the time the sample becomes available for transmission, eg as IPv4 Packet where the Ipv4 Header will take up 20 bytes with the sample data filling the data portion, before the completed Ipv4 packet is sent eg via 64Kbs modem line by the PC. The 20 bytes (ie 160 bits) IP header takes 2.5 milliseconds to exit the modem along the 64Kbs line, thus introduces 2.5 milliseconds delay to the start of transmission of the actual sample data along the 64K line.
To eliminate the above example 2.5 milliseconds latency introduced by the Ipv4 Packet Header overhead, the method here presends the Ipv4 packet header from the PC to the modem exactly 2 5 milliseconds ahead before the periodic sample PCM audio data becomes available for the PC to start sending the periodic sample PCM audio sample (as Ipv4 Packet data portion, with or without computed checksum as required) to the modem for immediate transmission along the 64Kbs line. The sample PCM audio data portion will then be sent by the PC immediately following the Ipv4 Packet Header exiting the modem along the 64Kbs line.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
For example, a single Voice telephony, the 4 KHz analog signals at say 1/100 second intervals are first converted to 640 bits/sec digital signals using PCM sampling at twice the analog frequency, & the PCM sample is then compressed as required to fit the 64Kbs transmission line bandwidths (taking into consideration also the 160 bits IPv4 Packet Header overhead required to transmit each 640 bits sample PCM audio data above). Here the IP Packet Header is pre-sent, by the PC's accordingly modified Protocol Stacks/Modem Driver softwares, to the modem for immediate transmission along the 64Kbs line exactly 2.5 milliseconds before the PC sends the compressed sample PCM data to the modem for immediate transmission along the 64KBS line, at every 1/100 second periodic intervals The above-described embodiments merely illustrate the principles of the invention.
Those skilled in the art may make various modifications and changes that will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof
Claims (1)
- CLAIMS 1 A Method for transmitting periodic data over the Internet, said Method here presends the IP packet/ATM Cell/Ethernet Frame (etc..) header ahead in time before the periodic data portion first becomes available to be transmitted, immediately following the IP packet/ATM Cell/Ethernet Frame (etc..) header along the transmission line.
