Abstract
The on-site preparation of a modified concrete mix in which an aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension of an active ingredient is transferred under pressure through a pipe such as hosepipe 2 to the interior of a drum of a vehicular concrete mixer. This reduces the risk of on-site injuries to operators who would otherwise have to climb a ladder to pour the aqueous active ingredient from a bucket directly into the drum. The liquid can be fed into reservoir 1 by means of funnel 3 and can be pressurised by connecting hosepipe 4, which can be pressurised by the vehicular air-brake compressor, to reservoir 1.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Method of on-site preparation of modified concrete This invention is concerned with a method of on-site preparation of modified concrete. In particular, this invention concerns the on-site preparation of a modified concrete mix in the rotating drum of a vehicular concrete mixer.
Vehicular concrete mixers have been used for many years for transporting mass-produced concrete slurries from concrete factories, where the slurries are prepared, to building and construction sites, where the slurries are used. The properties of a mass-produced concrete mix and/or the dried concrete formed therefrom can be modified by the addition of an active ingredient to the mass-produced concrete mix. Whilst it is preferred that the active ingredient is added to the mass-produced concrete mix before the vehicular concrete mixer departs from the concrete factory, as the desired properties obtainable by using the active ingredient may only be achievable by adding the active ingredient to the mix either immediately or shortly before the modified mix is used, the time taken to transport the cement mix from the factory to the building or construction site may be such that it is necessary to add the active ingredient to the mass-produced concrete mix on-site.
On-site modification of a mass-produced concrete mix contained within a drum of a vehicular concrete mixer is typically performed by an operator, usually the driver of the vehicular concrete mixer or a construction or building worker. The method usually comprises a) preparing an aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension of the active ingredient in a bucket, then b) transferring the aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension to the interior of the drum by pouring the contents of the bucket through the mouth of the drum, and then c) mixing the active ingredient into the mix by rotating the drum. Once the active ingredient is thoroughly mixed into the mix, the modified concrete mix so produced is then discharged from the drum to the appropriate use point.
As the mouth of the rotating drum on a vehicular concrete mixer is usually located well above normal head height, it has been common practice for many years for the operator to climb a ladder, such as the inspection ladder fixed on the vehicular concrete mixer, to get access to the mouth before being able to pour the aqueous contents of the bucket into the rotating drum. However, when carrying a bucket in one hand, the operator has only one hand available to assist in ascending and descending the ladder. Consequently, should the operator
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
slip or misjudge the steps when climbing up or down the ladder, as the operator has only one hand available to secure or steady himself, there is an increased risk of the operator suffering an injury through falling to the ground or onto the rotating drum. Further, when reaching to pour the contents of the bucket into the drum, there is a possibility the operator may overreach himself, thereby leading to an increased risk of the operator suffering an injury through falling to the ground or onto the rotating drum.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of on-site preparation of a modified concrete mix in the rotating drum of a vehicular concrete mixer which method reduces or substantially eliminates the risk of operator injury.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method of on-site preparation of a modified concrete mix, which method comprises: a) preparing an aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension of an active ingredient in a vessel; b) transferring said aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension to the interior of a drum of a vehicular concrete mixer located at a building or construction site at which said modified concrete mix is to be used, said drum containing a mass-produced concrete mix; and c) mixing said aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension into said mix by rotating said drum; characterized in that said aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension is transferred to the interior of said drum under pressure through a pipe having an input end and an output end, wherein the output end of the pipe is located within or at the mouth of the drum, and wherein said aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension is discharged to the interior of the drum through the output end of the pipe.
Preferably, the input end of the pipe is fitted with a funnel or a reservoir for receiving the aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension from the vessel prior to it entering the pipe.

A closable intake funnel (3), through which the aqueous solution, dispersion or suspension is initially fed before it is stored temporarily in the reservoir (1), is located at a convenient height for easy access by an operator. At the building site, the operator prepares a solution of active ingredient in a bucket, then pours the contents of the bucket into the reservoir (1) through funnel (3). Air is then supplied to the reservoir through hosepipe (4) to provide the pressure necessary to transfer the solution from the reservoir (1), through the hosepipe (2) to the drum, where the solution is then mixed with a ready mixed concrete. The ready mixed concrete was placed in the drum at the concrete factory, some time prior to the arrival of the vehicular concrete mixer at the building site.
