Abstract

The device is a broad strap for use following a fracture of the pelvis. It compresses the pelvic bones, reducing the fracture and blood-loss. The strap may be approximately 85cm x 12cm in size. Preferably it is made of nylon or a similar material which is flexible, but will not stretch. It may have smaller straps attached to the ends for fastening with self-locking buckles. It may be applied at the scene of the accident, or in hospital.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
PELVIC COMPRESSION STRAP DESCRIPTION This invention relates to a device for compressing the human pelvis after sever fractures.
Severe injury to the pelvis, such as after a road traffic accident or a crushing injury at work, can lead to opening-up of the pelvic bones, which normally form a ring. This in turn leads to massive bleeding from the bone ends and from the veins and arteries which are torn during the injury.
Compression of the pelvis has been shown to reduce the amount of blood loss. Conventional compression involves screwing metal rods into the pelvis and pulling these together using bars and screws attached externally. However, this method takes time to be applied, during which time the patient may have lost a lot of blood.
This invention consists of a broad strap approximately 85 x 12 cm and made of woven nylon or some such material which makes it flexible but not stretchable. Smaller straps are attached to the end of the main strap as in the diagram. The strap is applied around the patient's pelvis and tightened, using self-locking buckles, until the pelvic bones are compressed together. It could be applied by suitably trained staff, at the scene of the accident or in the emergency room at the hospital. A metal external fixator could then be applied at a later date/time.
