Abstract

A goggles lens 1 has one or more indentations or projections 2 along its external surface with the irregular surface area being underneath the standard location for roll off strip 3. These projections can be mounted onto the lens in the form of wire strip, or produced as an integral part of the lens and are suitable for use in motocross and other activities where goggles are worn with a removable film. This film helps to maintain clear vision throughout a race by allowing the rider to pull new film from roll holder 4, usually by means of a pull cord mechanism. The projections prevent moisture between the tear off strip and lens creating surface tension and hence allows the film to move freely.

IRREGULAR SURFACE GOGGLES LENS FOR USE WTH REMOVABLE FILMS This invention relates to a design of eye safety wear (goggles), and specifically the lens of goggles for use in motocross and other activities.
Those who take part in motocross experience the problem of not being able to maintain clear vision throughout the length of a race. Riders use goggles with a roll off mechanism which is fitted onto the goggles and comprises of a roll holder 4 attached to each side of the lens 1, and a roll of transparent film 3 which is transferred from one side of the lens to the other by way of a pull cord mechanism. When using a roll off strip mechanism, the strip of film becomes stuck to the lens if any moisture, whether from rain, mud splashes, sweat, or other sources gets between the lens and film strip. When the pull cord is used the film strip does not transfer from one side of the goggles to the other as designed, and the pull cord therefore snaps as a result of the pull cord action failing. This then leaves the rider unable to clear his view, with the strip of film either broken or fixed at the point it became stuck.
This invention modifies the existing lens used, by slightly (less than 2mm) and constantly raising the surface of the lens, along the width of the lens, at one or more points where the strip of film sits over the lens. Moisture between the lens and strip of film creates a surface tension, and the irregular lens surface 2 prevents this from occurring, so allowing the removable film to move freely. A constant horizontal strip achieves the break of surface tension to best effect, although any form of indentation or projection on the lens surface would have the required effect.
This can be achieved by either changing the existing lens so that the lens surface itself is slightly raised at one or more points across its width, or by attaching an external device in the form of one or more fine strips of plastic such as nylon, fishing wire (or any other suitable material-metal wire or cotton would serve the purpose) to the roll holders, or other suitable attachment of the goggles, so that the device runs across the surface, beneath the strip of film placement.
Figure 1 shows the front section of the lens design and the film position.
Figure 2 shows the cross section of the lens and the film position.
