Abstract

A safety chain door lock mounted on the internal side of a door (8 figure 3). The chain catch 5 is mounted on one end to the door frame and the other end slides into groove 4 of the lock (figure 1). Once in the groove it is kept in position by spring loaded plunger (2,3 figure 2). If the door is opened the chain catch will pull against plunger 3 and slide into groove 4 only allowing the door to be opened a few inches. When the door is closed plunger 3 will push the chain catch back to the original position. The chain is released in a emergency from outside the door by a standard key lock (9 figure 3) which is attached to a disc with off centre pivot (7, figure 2). When the key is turned it will rotate disc 7 pushing up plunger 6 which will push the chain catch 5 out of the top of groove 4. From inside the door the chain catch 5 is released by sliding it upwards out of groove 4.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Safety Chain Door Lock The invention relates to a safety chain lock mounted on the inside of a door, allowing the door to be opened by a few inches so the occupier can see the person on the other side of the door but the caller cannot push the door fully open and gain entry.
Normal standard door chains can only be released/opened from the inside of the door by the occupier. This door chain lock can be released from the outside of the door by a key lock The occupier/owner of the door chain lock would give keys to specific people i. e. relatives or care workers who could release the chain in the event of an emergency if the owner on the inside was unable for some reason The lock is made from metal for strength and can have various finishes to match existing door furniture i. e. brass, coated white, coated black or chrome finish.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a front view of the lock Figure 2 shows a front view of the lock with the cover removed exposing the working components.
Figure 3 shows a section of the lock.
As shown in figure 1 the door chain catch 5 slides downwards into the groove 4. The other end of the chain catch 5 would be mounted to the door frame. A plunger 3 loaded by a spring 2 keeps pressure on 5 preventing it from travelling further into groove 4. If the door is opened and the slack on the chain 5 is taken up then it will push against plunger 3 and slide along groove 4. When the door is closed and the chain slackens the spring 2 and plunger 3 will push 5 back to the starting position.
The groove 4 is cut into the front cover of the lock 1 As shown in figure 2 another plunger 6 would rest on the bottom of 5. A disc with an off centre pivot 7 would when turned push up on plunger 6 moving plunger 6 upwards and pushing chain catch 5 upwards and out of groove 4 in figure 1 disengaging 5.
As shown in figure 3 a section of the lock mounted on a door 8 The lock can be operated by any standard key lock 9 mounted on the outer edge of door 8. The key lock is attached to disc 7. Any person the owner has supplied a key to can release the lock with the door in the closed position

Claims (4)

  1. Claims 1. A door safety chain lock including a spring loaded plunger and a secondary plunger operated by a disc with off centre pivot allowing the safety chain to be released with a key from outside the door.
  2. 2 A lock as claimed in claim 1 where the disc with off centre pivot is rotated by attachment to a key lock
  3. 3. A lock as claimed in any proceeding claim which is made from metal or a combination of metal and plastic materials.
  4. 4. A lock substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
    <Desc/Clms Page number 3>
    Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows Claims I A door safety chain lock comprising a member intended to be mounted on the inside of a door and defining a slot intended to receive the end of a safety chain for slidable movement therealong and having at one end an opening to allow the said chain end to enter and leave the slot, a spring loaded plunger acting on the said chain end to bias the chain end to said one end of the slot ; an eccentrically pivoted disc acting on a further plunger to engage the chain end when it is located at said one end of the slot to move the chain end through the opening and disengage the chain end from the slot, the disc being intended to be pivoted by a key operated lock mounted on the outside of the door.
    2 A lock as claimed in any proceeding claim which is made from metal or a combination of metal and plastic materials.
    3 A lock substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
