Abstract

A box with a removable lid that is hinged along a line of weakness in one of the sides of the box and has flanges fitting over the other sides, the line of weakness being so placed that, on removal and reversal of the lid ie replacement turned through 180{ - the line of weakness is covered by the previously opposite flange, the part of the lid extending to the hinge then fitting over the side previously covered by that flange.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
ONE-PIECE SHOE BOX The invention relates to lidded boxes, generally rectangular in shape but in principle of other polygonal shapes with an even number of sides.
Shoe boxes are frequently used for display, and there is a market call for a box made from a one-piece blank but still providing for display of the shoes, with the lid on the base of the box, and for use by the customer to take shoes away with the lid replaced and secure. The shoe manufacturer can then erect the box and send it to the retailer with the shoes in it, the retailer can display them, and the customer can take them away each with his purposes served We have had the idea of a shoe box with a removable lid that is hinged along a line of weakness in one of the sides of the box and has flanges fitting over the other sides in the usual way for carriage of the shoes from the manufacturer. For display, the lid is removed. The line of weakness is however so placed that, on reversal of the lidreplacement turned through 180 -the line of weakness is covered by the previously opposite flange, the part of the lid extending to the hinge then fitting over the side previously covered by that flange and giving a fully protective box for the customer's use.
More generally we provide a polygonal box symmetrical about a central plane, foldable from a one-piece blank to give a tray having a bottom and sides and covered by a lid, all but one of the edges of the lid having flanges fitting over corresponding sides of the tray and the remaining edge having a flange continuous with the remaining side of the tray, that side having a line of weakness between itself and the flange about which the lid can hinge or be separated from the tray, and the flange opposite said side being deep enough to cover the line of weakness on separation and reversed replacement of the lid.
The invention is discussed further in relation to the drawings wherein :-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 1 shows a blank, with cuts indicated in the conventional way by full lines and fold lines by dashed lines; Figure 2 shows an erected box at the moment of separation of the lid.
In the drawings, a box base 1 is continuous with side panels 2 and 3 and end panels 4 and 5. Side panels 2 and 3 carry end flaps 6 which on erection of the box lie apposed to end panels 4 and 5, covered by locking flaps 7 carried by the end panels and folded over during erection. Flaps 7 are held in place by locking tabs 8 entering slots 9. One of the end panels has a push-in tab 10 cooperating with a hole 11 in the adjacent end flap 6 and with a cut out 12 in the locking flap, to provide a thumb hole for removing boxes from shelves easily.
The lid, generally indicated at 14, has a main panel 15 with end flanges 16 and a side flange 18. Flanges 16 carry locking flaps 17 which on erection of the lid lie over and enclose small end flaps 20 and 21 and are themselves held in place by locking tabs 22 and slots 23. Illustrating the present invention, side panel 3 of the box has a perforation 13 along which the lid can hinge or, when required, be separated. Extending from side panel 3 is a narrow panel 24 which, in the erected box with the lid unseparated along perforation 13, can be regarded as a lid flange or functionally as a continuation of side panel 3. As may be seen from the drawings, this panel 24 is narrower than flange 18 so that when the lid is removed, as shown part-done in Figure 2, and is then replaced reversed, flange 18 covers the perforation line 13 while panel 24 lies over the top edge 25 of side panel 2 in the ordinary way. A strong box for use carrying the customer's shoes therefore remains, without impairing the lid's convenient removal and fitting over the bottom of the box for display.

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A polygonal box symmetrical about a central plane, foldable from a one-piece blank to give a tray having a bottom and sides and covered by a lid, all but one of the edges of the lid having flanges fitting over corresponding sides of the tray and the remaining edge having a flange continuous with the remaining side of the tray, that side having a line of weakness between itself and the flange about which the lid can hinge or be separated from the tray, and the flange opposite said side being deep enough to cover the line of weakness on separation and reversed replacement of the lid.
  2. 2. A shoe box with a removable lid that is hinged along a line of weakness in one of the sides of the box and has flanges fitting over the other sides, the line of weakness being so placed that, on removal and reversal of the lid-replacement turned through
    0 180-the line of weakness is covered by the previously opposite flange, the part of the lid extending to the hinge then fitting over the side previously covered by that flange.
