Abstract

A container 1, especially suitable for dispensing paint, comprises a reservoir 2 of liquid and a smaller dispensing chamber 4. Positioned between the reservoir and the dispensing chamber is a weir 5. Inclining the container 1 causes a quantity of fluid to flow from the reservoir 2 over the weir 5 to the dispensing chamber 4. When inclination is reversed, a quantity of fluid remains in the dispensing chamber 4. The weir 5 is removable and interchangeable with other weirs of different dimensions in order to vary the amount of liquid retained in the dispensing chamber 4. A wall 7 of the reservoir 2 is preferably inclined at an angle of 30<SP>o</SP> to 60<SP>o</SP> to the base of the reservoir 2. An opening 12 may be provided above the dispensing chamber 4 for access to the fluid retained in the chamber 4.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
REGULATING CONTAINER This invention relates to a regulating container for a liquid which container has an ability to regulate the amount of a liquid available for withdrawal from the container. For example, if the regulating container is filled with a viscous coating composition such as a paint, varnish or woodstain, it may be used to regulate the amount of coating composition available for loading onto an application tool such as a brush, roller or pad of the type used to apply coating composition at ambient temperatures (say 5 to 40 C) to walls, ceilings and other surfaces found in buildings.
Coating compositions are often applied by amateur or "do-it-yourself' (Le.
DIY) painters who have little or no experience or skill. They often dip their application tool too deeply into a volume of paint with the unfortunate result that they overload the tool with paint and may even get paint onto the handle of the tool. An overloaded tool drips and creates mess especially when it is being used to paint a ceiling. An overloaded tool usually also transfers too much coating
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
composition onto a surface with the result that the fluid coating will migrate before the coating composition has dried. Migration creates unsightly marks, particularly if the surface is vertical, and these marks are often called"sag marks" or"sagging".
An object of this invention is to provide a regulating container with an ability to regulate the amount of a liquid available for withdrawal from the container. If the container is filled with a coating composition, its ability to regulate the amount of coating composition available for withdrawal can be used to minimise the risk of overloading onto an application tool.
Accordingly this invention provides a regulating container for a liquid which container has an ability to regulate the amount of liquid available for withdrawal from the container wherein the container has a) a reservoir for storing liquid, b) a dispensing chamber of lesser dimensions than the reservoir and c) a weir positioned between the reservoir and the dispensing chamber whereby inclining the reservoir causes delivery of an amount of liquid from the reservoir over the weir into the dispensing chamber whereafter if the inclination is reversed an amount of liquid can be retained in the dispensing chamber by the weir. The amount of liquid retained in the dispensing chamber is regulated by the height of the weir and the dimensions of the chamber. By choosing an appropriate weir height and appropriate chamber dimensions, the volume of liquid retained can be regulated so as to minimise or avoid any overloading of an

application tool dipped into the retained liquid. In a modification of the invention, a set of interchangeable weirs are provided so that alternative amounts of liquid can be retained in the dispensing chamber to meet the needs of tools of alternative sizes.
The regulating container is most conveniently inclined to an angle of from 30 to 60 (preferably 40 to 50 ) to the vertical when delivering liquid from the reservoir to the dispensing chamber. This means that if the walls of a reservoir rise vertically up from its base, then there will be a"dead spot"in the reservoir adjacent and below the dispensing chamber from which it will be difficult to deliver liquid by any convenient inclination of the container. For this reason, it is preferred to form the reservoir with its wall adjacent the dispensing chamber inclined so that it lies approximately horizontal when the container is inclined.
Therefore, this wall is preferably inclined at an angle of 30 to 60 to the vertical and especially 40 to 500 to the vertical.
The invention is further illustrated by the following preferred embodiment described with reference to the drawings of which Figure I is a side elevation with part in section of a regulating container filled with a liquid Figure 2 is a side elevation with part in section of the container shown in Figure 1 when inclined to an angle of 45 to the vertical.
Figure 3 is a side elevation with part in section of the container shown in Figures 1 and 2 after the inclination has been reversed.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Figures 4 and 5 are side elevations on a larger scale with part in section of alternative weirs and their mounting.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a weir in its mounting.
Figure 1 shows a regulating container I comprising a reservoir 2 filled with paint 3 and a dispensing chamber 4 of lesser dimensions than reservoir 2. A weir 5 is positioned between reservoir 2 and chamber 4. The container I is moulded from polypropylene and has an integral handle 6. Reservoir 2 is formed with wall 7 inclined at an angle of 45 to base 8 of reservoir 2. Reservoir 2 is also provided with a filling inlet 9 closed by a removable lid 10 which press fits into inlet 9.
Dispensing chamber 4 is provided with an access inlet 11 closed by a removable lid 12 which press fits into inlet 11.
In use, container I is gripped by means of handle 6 and inclined to an angle of 45 as shown in Figure 2. The inclination delivers paint 3 from reservoir 1 over weir 4 into dispensing chamber 4. On reversing the inclination back to the position shown in Figure 3, an amount 13 of paint is retained in dispensing chamber 4 by weir 5 whilst the remainder flows back into reservoir 2. Lid 12 is removed and brush 14 is inserted into paint 13 which is available for loading onto brush 14. The volume and depth of amount 13 of paint is such as to prevent an overloading of paint onto brush 14. Brush 14 and its loaded paint can then be withdrawn from dispensing chamber 4.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Figures 4 and 6 show an alternative weir 15 in the form of a rectangular plate inserted into keyways 16 formed integrally with container 1. Figure 5 shows a further alternative weir 17 formed from a broader rectangular plate likewise inserted into keyways 16. By exchanging narrow weir 15 for broader weir 17, it is possible to increase the amount 13 of paint in dispensing chamber 4 so as to accommodate a larger brush.
Dispensing chamber 4 as shown in Figure I is formed integrally with reservoir 2. However in alternative embodiments, it may instead be clipped, pressed, screwed, keyed or swivel mounted onto reservoir 2.
Liquid 3 may have a viscosity of from 0.05 to 5 pa. sec and most paints have a viscosity of from 0.7 to 2 pa. sec.
