Description
CABLE ATTACHMENT DEVICE
The present invention relates to a cable attachment device. More in particular, the present invention relates to a cable attachment device comprising a cable attachment plate having attachment means for attaching cables and mounting means for mounting the cable attachment plate on a support.
Cable attachment devices of this kind are used to terminate cables at optical fibre management racks. Examples of such racks are disclosed in International Patent
Applications WO 01/06293 (Tyco Electronics Raychem) [B373] and PCT/GBOO/03779 (Tyco Electronics Raychem) [B382]. The cables entering the rack are attached to the attachment plates to provide strain relief and to fix their positions relative to the rack. To this end, a cable fastener such as a tie-wrap may be fastened around the cable sheath. To terminate the cable, the sheath will be removed over a certain length, revealing the strength member (often a metal wire) and the constituent cable members (such as optical fibres) of the cable. To provide strain relief the strength member of the cable may be clamped by a suitable clamping device mounted on the cable attachment plate.
In present-day optical fibre management racks, there is an increasing demand for higher cable densities. That is, larger number of cables are to be interconnected in a single rack. This also means that more cables will have to terminated. The number of cables that can be attached to a single cable attachment plate is, however, limited.
It is an object of the present invention to eliminate the problems of the Prior Art and to provide a cable attachment device capable of attaching a larger number of cables.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a cable attachment device which is compact yet allows a high degree of organisation.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a cable attachment device which is economical.
To meet these and other objects the present invention provides a cable attachment device as defined in the preamble which is characterised by at least one further cable attachment plate.
By providing at least one further cable attachment plate in the same cable attachment device, it is possible to attach more cables using a single cable attachment device thus increasing its capacity.
In a preferred embodiment, the cable attachment plate and the at least one further cable attachment plate are substantially parallel. Preferably, the at least two plates substantially overlap, that is, they form a substantially stacked, compact arrangement.
In the preferred embodiment, the cable attachment plate and the at least one further cable attachment plate are spaced apart. In this way, space is provided between the cable attachment plates for accommodating cables. More in particular, in the preferred embodiment each cable attachment plate has a front face on which the cable attachment means are mounted and a back face which is substantially free from cable attachment means, and in which the front face of the cable attachment plate faces the back face of the at least one further cable attachment plate. Although a"back-to-back"arrangement of the plates can be envisaged, a stacked arrangement in which the plates all face in the same direction easily allows more than two plates to be used.
Advantageously, the plates are spaced apart by spacing means mutually connecting the plates. Thus by mounting each further plate on a plate already present the device is readily expanded without requiring any modification of the mounting means by means of which the device is mounted on a support.
The cable attachment device of the present invention may comprise two, three, four or even more cable attachment plates. Preferably, the attachment means comprise cable fasteners and cable strength member clamps.
The present invention further provides a kit-of-parts for forming a cable attachment
device as defined above.
In addition, the present invention provides a method for attaching a plurality of cables to a support, comprising the steps of mounting a mounting means on the support, mounting a first cable attachment plate on the mounting means, attaching a first group of cables to the first cable attachment plate, mounting a second cable attachment plate on the first cable attachment plate, and attaching a second group of cables to the second cable attachment plate.
The present invention will further be explained below with reference to an exemplary embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows, in perspective, a cable attachment device according to the present invention.
The cable attachment device 1 shown merely by way of non-limiting example in Fig. 1 comprises a first cable attachment plate 2, a second cable attachment plate 2', a third cable attachment plate 2"and a fourth cable attachment plate 2"'. One of the plates, in the present example the third plate 2", is mounted on the support 25 (an optical fibre management cabinet) by means of a mounting bracket 4. This bracket 4 may be fastened to the third plate 2"by suitable screws or the like. The plates 2-2"'are preferably made of metal.
Spacers 5 serve to provide suitable, preferably uniform spacing and to mutually connect the plates. Advantageously the spacers are provided with screw-threaded holes in which screws can be fitted. In this way, any additional plates can easily be mounted. To attach any cables, the plates are each provided with suitable openings 9 in which tie-wraps can be fitted. In addition, cable strength member clamps 7 are provided on the front 10 of the plates. In the embodiment shown, approximately 20 cables can be attached to a single plate. The maximum capacity of the device of Fig. 1 is therefore 80 cables. Other numbers of cables are of course also possible.
It will therefore be understood by those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments shown and that many additions and modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appending claims.
