Abstract

The device comprises an elongate leg (2), a hinge assembly (1) and a ferrule (3) , where a first end of the leg is pivotally attached to the hinge assembly and the ferrule is attached to a second end of the leg. In use, the hinge assembly is fixed to a door and the leg is movable such that the ferrule contacts the floor, preventing movement of the door by a bracing action. Preferably the leg is adjustable in length and further includes a pressure activated alarm.

Description

DESCRIPTION DOOR RESTRAINT This invention relates to a door restraint. The door restraint enables a person to prevent unwanted entry by means of hinged leg, which acts against the force of an inward opening door.
The object of this is to provide security to those persons who need a quick and easy method of preventing unwanted access. It would be particularly useful for people with poor eyesight because there are no fiddly chains to engage.
It is easy to use: pull down or push up to disengage. It is strong as it acts against the lateral force of the door hinges and has a leg, which will not buckle. It is always convenient to use and will not get lost like a door wedge.
Its design also allows the user incremental yet safe opening of the door by the gradual drawing back of the leg (for example with a walking stick).
Accordingly the features of this invention include a tubular leg with ferrule (end stop) on the floor end. The other end locates into a hinged assembly. The hinged assembly comprises of a pivot bracket, pivot pin, washers and "starlock"end caps. From the centre of the pivot pin extends a locating arm.
This in turn inserts into the tubular leg.
The assembly fits to the inside face of a door (the stile) by screws through the holes in the pivot bracket. The pivot bracket can also be fitted to a larger heavy duty plate for greater strength. When in use the leg is allowed to swing down to the floor at an acute angle (approximately 50 degrees incline). When not in use the leg swings upwards and locates into a retaining clip on the door.
Preferably the tubular leg is made of metal or plastic. The end ferrule or stop end is preferably made of plastic or rubber. The hinged assembly, retaining clip and heavy duty plate is also preferably made of metal or plastic.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is for use on hinged external doors. The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows the front view of the whole item FIGURE 2 shows the hinged assembly FIGURE 3 shows the optional heavy duty plate FIGURE 4 shows the hinged assembly and fixing into the tubular leg FIGURE 5 shows the doorstop engaged and disengaged on a door.
As shown in Figure 1, the Door Restraint, when engaged, comprises of a hinged assembly 1, tubular leg 2 and ferrule (stop end) 3.
Figure 2 shows the hinged assembly 1 in more detail. This is made up a pivot bracket 4 with fixing holes 12 which holds a pivot pin 5 at 90 degrees. The pivot pin 5 is secured by washers 6 and"starlock"end caps 7 to maintain a clear vertical pivoting action. The pivot pin 5 has a threaded hole in its centre into which the locating arm 8 screws.
Figure 3 shows the optional heavy duty plate 10. This allows the pivot bracket 4 to align to its centre fixing holes and 6 screws are then used to fix the heavy duty plate 10 to the door or wing stile.
Figure 4 shows the hinged bracket in 3D projection. Note the locating arm 8 protruding from the pivot pin 5. The locating arm 8 push fits into the shaped bung 9, which itself is fitted to the end of the tubular leg 2. This is the preferred fixing of the hinged assembly 1 to the tubular leg 2.
Figure 5 shows the side view of the whole assembly in both the engaged and disengaged position. The door restraint fits on the inside of the lower half of an external door, preferably on the door stile. The pivot bracket 1 is fixed to the door (through fixing holes 12) at a suitable height to allow an acute angle for the tubular leg 2. The ferrule 3 provides grip and resistance against the force applied. Note the retaining clip 11 is fixed at a suitable height below the door handle but convenient to pull the tubular leg down.
("Starlock"is a trademark of Baker & Finnemore Ltd, Birmingham. There are other similar push on end caps that could easily be used)
