Abstract

The security device has a locking mechanism complete with chambers located securely within the bicycle frame (FIG 2). Male inserts will be situated within the chambers when the bicycle is secured (FIG 5 - with ref:3 in 'sprung close' position), preventing access to remove the complete locking mechanism. The only visible part of the device will be the high tensile chain/wire. This will protect against reasonable force. If the chain/wire is cut the locking mechanism will still be situated within the frame. This will ensure that the bicycle can be visibly seen as stolen. The device can only be unlocked with the use of the owners' key.

Description

BICYCLE SECURITY DEVICE This security system is prevention against theft for bicycles, using standard locks as a permanent fixture within the bike itself, as well as a chain/wire as a fastening device.
Current security chains and locks are separate pieces of equipment that are independent of the bike itself. This means that if a thief cuts them open the bike is totally undamaged and is easy to resell. These types of products can only deter so called 'opportunist'thieves.
The possibility of this invention is that the locking mechanism itself and the male inserts of the detachable chain/wire cannot be cut, dismantled or interfered with unless the entire bike frame itself is cut open. To release the detachable chain/wire the locking mechanism needs a key. This will only allow the owner to open the device.
To deter the average thief the chain/wire should be of a high tensile strength to resist being cut open easily and quickly.
For ease of use the chain/wire should have male inserts that are quick to use, preferably a simple push in device.
To show one of the positions the locking mechanism could be fitted within the bike, as well as how the chain/wire is attached and unlocked, please refer to the following drawings: Figure 1: shows one of the prominent positions of the locking mechanism on the bike frame.
Figure 2: is the cross section (view'A'from figure 1) showing how the locking mechanism could fit inside the bike frame.
Figure 3: gives the location of penetration points for the male inserts of the chain/wire, from the side view of the frame.
Figure 4: is the plan view showing the keyhole.
Figure 5: shows the style of the male inserts that are connected to the high tensile chain/wire, as well as how they are locked into the male insert chambers.
To view the position of the locking mechanism unit (2), Figure 1 shows how discreet the device is as only the male insert chambers (1) and the keyhole (5) protrudes through the bike frame. This would be the most difficult position as a thief would have to cut through the bike frame in two places to remove either the locking mechanism unit (2) as a whole or the male inserts (6) that are locked inside.
Figure 2 is the'Cross Section' (view on'A') from Figure 1. It shows that the locking mechanism unit (2) is totally encased by the bike frame and is therefore a permanent fixture of the bike itself. If it were attached to the bike frame by means of welding for example, no one would be able to remove it without damaging the locking mechanism unit (2), the bike frame or both.
The holding bar (3) as seen in Figure 3 is sprung loaded. This allows it to spring back into the closed position after both the male inserts (6) are pushed past when locking the bike up.
The male inserts (6) are locked in place, as the shoulder of the dome cannot be retracted passed the closed holding bar (3) as shown in Figure 5. Only using the key (4) in the keyhole (5), as Figure 4, can the locking bar (3) be turned to the open position.
This allows the male inserts (6) to be retracted, also shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5 shows the male inserts (6) attached to the high tensile chain/wire (7). This can then be wrapped around any immovable object like a lamppost. The male inserts (6) are then pushed into the male insert chambers (1) as stated above, making the device one whole unit, totally securing the bike.

Claims (7)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A detachable chain/wire complete with a locking mechanism, which can be fixed with a locking mechanism that is situated inside the frame.
  2. 2. The chain/wire as noted in Claim 1 is to be of high tensile material.
  3. 3. The chain/wire locking mechanism as noted in Claim 1 & 2 are to be compatible with the frames'locking mechanism as noted in Claim 1.
  4. 4. As the one piece locking mechanism is situated inside the frame as noted in Claim 1, it should be impossible to remove without damaging the frame.
  5. 5. The locking mechanism as noted in Claims 1,3 & 4 should be a fixture of the frame.
  6. 6. All possible components as noted in Claims 1,2, 3,4 & 5 are to be made of steel or hardened steel taking careful note of Claim 2.
  7. 7. A security device substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings
