Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO ADAPTERS
Field of the Invention The present invention relates to adapters, in particular, although not exclusively, to adapters for use in connecting water pipes to domestic water heating cylinders.
Background of the Invention Domestic plumbing systems are governed in the United Kingdom at least by various industry standards that require pipes and water cylinder connectors, for example, to have to have certain dimensions. Unfortunately, the required dimensions for a domestic water heating cylinder connector does not correspond with the required dimensions for domestic hot water pipes. The water cylinder connector is significantly larger than the pipes that need to be connected to it.
On a domestic water heating cylinder manufactured to British Standard, the connector must have an external diameter, including the threading on the exterior of the connector, of typically 1 inch British Standard Pipe Thread (25.4mm). The inner diameter of the connector varies from one manufacturer to another. Standard domestic piping has an external diameter of 22mm. Pipes having other external diameters, for example, of 15 mm, are also used in some applications.
Various different devices are used conventionally to bridge the gap between the pipe to the water. The
majority of these devices are arranged to cover the external surface of the connector and the pipe in the region of the join. Commonly, these devices are known as adapter fittings.
In order to provide a water tight seal between a pipe and an adapter a sealing device known as an olive is inserted inside the adapter and is located between the interior wall of the adapter and the exterior wall of the pipe.
When the pipe and adapter are attached together the olive is compressed between the interior of the adapter and the exterior of the pipe and thus provides a water tight seal.
It is an aim of preferred embodiments of the present invention to provide an improved means of connecting a domestic water heating cylinder and a pipe in a domestic water system.
Summary of the Invention The present invention provides in a first aspect an adapter for a domestic water heating cylinder connector comprising a sleeve having a first end and an outwardly extending lip at a second end thereof, wherein, in use, with the first end inserted into a distal end of a domestic water heating cylinder connector, part at least of the outwardly extending lip is proud of the distal end of the connector and is for receiving a domestic water pipe.
The thickness of the sleeve wall, as defined by the difference between the inner and outer diameter of the sleeve, is suitably sufficient to substantially bridge the
gap between an interior wall of a domestic water heating cylinder connector and an exterior wall of a pipe to be connected to the cylinder. A range of adapters may be provided each having a different sleeve wall thickness to suit different combinations of connector dimensions and pipe dimensions.
Suitably, the sleeve wall thickness is of minimum thickness providing sufficient strength to achieve the required function. Suitably, the sleeve wall thickness is at least O. lmm. Suitably, the sleeve wall thickness is less than 15mm, preferably less than 10mm, more preferably less than 5mm.
Suitably, the outer diameter of the sleeve is chosen to be slightly less than the inner diameter of the domestic water heating cylinder connector with which it is to be used. Suitably, the outer diameter of the sleeve is less than 25mm.
The difference in diameter between the outer diameter of the sleeve and the inner diameter of the domestic water heating cylinder connector is suitably as small as possible whilst still allowing for insertion and removal of the adapter from the connector.
Suitably, the inner diameter of the sleeve is chosen to be slightly greater than the outer diameter of the pipe that is to be connected to the domestic water heating cylinder connector. Suitably, the inner diameter of the sleeve is greater than 15mm, preferably greater than 20mm.
The difference in diameter between the inner diameter of the adapter and the outer diameter of the pipe is suitably as small as possible whilst still allowing for insertion and removal of the pipe from the adapter.
The outwardly extending lip may extend about part only of the second end. Suitably, the outwardly extending lip extends about the majority, and preferably, substantially the whole of the second end.
Suitably, the outwardly extending lip is provided by a section of the sleeve that has an increasing diameter. In other words, the end of the sleeve tapers outwards.
The maximum outer diameter of the outwardly extending lip is suitably equal to or less than the minor diameter of the thread root of the domestic water heating cylinder connector. In practice, the maximum outer diameter of the outwardly extending lip need not be significantly greater than the outer diameter of the sleeve. The outwardly extending lip provides a stopper to prevent over insertion of the adapter into a domestic water heating cylinder connector. The outwardly extending lip also provides a sealing face between the adaptor and the domestic water heating cylinder connector.
Suitably, the maximum outer diameter of the outwardly extending lip is at least lmm, preferably at least 1. 5mm and more preferably at least 2mm greater than the outer diameter of the sleeve. Suitably, the maximum outer diameter of the outwardly extending lip is less than 10mm, preferably less than 8mm and more preferably less than 5mm greater than the outer diameter of the sleeve.
The adapter may further comprise an inwardly extending flange extending from the outwardly extending lip. The inwardly extending flange may extend about part only of the outwardly extending lip. Suitably, the inwardly extending flange extends about the majority, preferably, substantially the whole of the outwardly extending lip.
Suitably, the inwardly extending flange is provided by a section of the sleeve having a gradually decreasing diameter. Suitably, the minimum inner diameter of the inwardly extending flange is equal to or greater than the inner diameter of the sleeve.
Suitably, the outwardly extending lip and the inwardly extending flange have a substantially curved profile.
Whilst the outwardly extending lip and/or the inwardly extending flange may comprise elements that are separate from the sleeve, the outwardly extending lip and the inwardly extending flange are suitable provided by a profiled continuation of the sleeve.
The adapter may comprise a stop end provided by an inturned flange extending from the first end of the sleeve. Suitably, the flange extends substantially perpendicular to the sleeve. The flange may extend about part only of the first end. Suitably, the flange extends about the majority of and preferably substantially the whole of the first end.
In use of an adapter in accordance with the present invention, the first end of the adapter is inserted into
an end of a domestic water heating cylinder connector that is distal from the water cylinder. The adapter is inserted into the connector until further insertion is prevented by abutment of the outwardly extending lip with the distal end of the connector.
Suitably, an interference fit is formed between the distal end of the connector and the outwardly extending lip. The interference fit is suitably sufficient to hold the adapter tightly in position within the connector, but can be overcome by application of a reasonable pulling force to remove the adapter from the connector.
Because of the gradually increasing diameter of the outwardly extending lip, the lip will abut the distal end of the connector before the lip is fully inserted into the connector. Therefore, a proportion of the lip will be proud of the distal end of the connector.
Suitably, at least lmm, preferably at least 2mm and more preferably at least 3mm of the outwardly extending lip is proud of the distal end of the domestic water heating cylinder connector in use.
A gland nut is then placed on the pipe and the pipe is then inserted into the adapter housed in the connector.
The adapter serves to downsize the interior dimensions of the connector and thus bridge the gap between the interior of the connector and the exterior of the pipe.
Once the pipe has been located in the connector/adapter the gland nut is screwed onto the threaded outer surface
of the connector to fasten the connector and the pipe together.
To provide a water tight seal between the pipe, the connector and the adapter, an olive may be used.
Suitably, the olive is placed in the outwardly extending lip before the pipe is inserted into the adapter.
The gland nut will abut the olive when screwed onto the connector and compress the olive, thus forming a water tight seal.
If the adapter comprises an inwardly extending flange extending from the outwardly extending lip, this inwardly extending flange suitably achieves the same function as a separate olive used with an adapter without an inwardly extending flange.
The gland nut will abut and compress the inwardly extending flange when screwed onto the connector and thus the inwardly extending flange will form a substantially water tight seal between the pipe and the connector.
The present invention advantageously provides a device for down sizing a water cylinder connector that is simple to use and manufacture. The device provides a means of improving the connection between a connector and a pipe of non-matching dimensions. The device can be provided in a range of sizes for use in different situations.
Furthermore, the adapter can be used with a conventional olive to provide a water tight seal. Alternatively, the device can be provided with an integral feature to negate
the requirement for an olive to provide a water tight seal.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a domestic water heating cylinder additionally comprising an adapter according to the first aspect of the invention.
Suitably, the cylinder additionally comprises a pipe to which the cylinder is connected, the pipe having an external diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the cylinder outlet, the cylinder outlet and the pipe being connected by the adapter.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of connecting a pipe to a domestic water heating cylinder, in which the external diameter of the pipe is smaller than the internal diameter of the cylinder outlet, the method comprising connecting the pipe to the cylinder outlet with an adapter according to the first aspect of the invention.
Brief Description of the Drawings The present invention will now be illustrated, by way of example only, with reference to the following drawings, in which : Figure 1 is a schematic cross-sectional side view of an adapter according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic cross-sectional side view of the adapter of figure 1 in use;
Figure 3 is a schematic cross-sectional side view of an alternative adapter according to the present invention, and Figure 4 is a schematic cross-sectional side view of the adapter of figure 3 in use.
Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention Figure 1 shows an adapter 2 comprising a sleeve 4, having a first end 6 and a second end 8. The adapter 2 further comprises a stop end 10 extending about the full periphery of the first end 6 of the sleeve 4. The adapter 2 further comprises an outwardly extending lip 12 extending about the full periphery of the second end 8 of the sleeve 4.
The stop end 10 extends substantially perpendicular of the inner surface 14 of the sleeve 4.
The lip 12 is an extension of the sleeve 4 that curls outwards.
In use, as shown in figure 2, the first end 6 of the adapter 2 is inserted into a distal end 16 of a domestic water heating cylinder connector 18. The domestic water heating cylinder connector 18 comprises a tubular body 20 having a smooth inner surface 22 and a threaded outer surface 24. In the embodiment illustrated in figure 2, the connector 18 has a flange 26 extending from the other end thereof for attaching the connector 18 to a water cylinder (not shown). Alternatively, the connector 18
need not comprise a flange 26, but may be attached directly to a water cylinder (not shown).
The distal end 16 of the connector 18, as shown in figure 2, is in the form of a rolled edge. The end 16 is chamfered having a first section chamfered substantially
at a gO angle and a second section chamfered at substantially a 30'angle. Whilst a connector 18 having a chamfered edge is preferred, it is not essential that the distal end 16 has a chamfered edge.
The adapter 2 is inserted into the connector 18 until the distal end 16 of the connector 18 abuts the lip 12 of the adapter 2.
A gland nut 28 is slid over a pipe 30 and then an olive 32 is slid over the pipe 30 adjacent the nut 28. An end of the pipe 30 is then inserted into the adapter 2. The stop end 10 of the adapter 2 provides a stop against which the end of the pipe 30 abuts when fully inserted into the adapter 2.
The nut 28 is then slid down the pipe 30 until the threaded section 34 of the nut 28 engages with the threaded section 24 of the connector 18. As the nut 28 is slid down the pipe 30, the olive 32 is also pushed down the pipe 30. As the nut 28 is screwed onto the connector 18, the olive 32 is compressed between the end wall 34 of the nut 28 and the lip 12.
Figure 3 shows an alternative adapter 100, comprising a sleeve 102, having a first end 104 and a second end 106.
A stop end 108 extends from the first end 104 of the sleeve 102. The stop end 108 extends about the full periphery of the first end 104.
An outwardly extending lip 110 is provided by an extension of the second end 106 of the sleeve 102. The outwardly extending lip 110 extends further into an inwardly extending flange 112. Both the outwardly extending lip 110 and the inwardly extending flange 112 extend about the full periphery of the second end 106 of the sleeve 102.
Figure 4 shows the adapter 100 of figure 3 in use.
In use, the first end 104 of the adapter 100 is inserted into a domestic water heating cylinder connector 114. The domestic water heating cylinder connector 114 comprises a tubular body having a smooth inner surface 116 and a threaded outer surface 118. In the embodiment illustrated in figure 2, the connector 114 also comprises a flange 120 extending from one end thereof, for attaching the connector 114 to a domestic water heating cylinder (not shown). Again, the connector 114 need not comprise a flange 120, but may be attached directly to a water cylinder (not shown). The connector 114 has a second end 122 that is distal the first end.
The adapter 100 is inserted into the connector 114 until the distal end 122 of the connector 114 abuts the lip 110 of the adapter 100. The connector 114 illustrated in figure 4 has a chamfered distal end 122, having a first section chamfered at 9 and a second section chamfered at 300. The distal end 122 of the connector 114 need not be chamfered (not shown). As can be seen from figure 4, when
the adapter 100 is fully inserted in the connector 114, a portion of the lip 110 is proud of the distal end 122 of the connector 114.
A gland nut 124 is then slid onto a pipe 126. An end of the pipe 126 is slid into the adapter 100 until the pipe 126 abuts the stop end 108 of the adapter 100.
When the pipe 126 is fully inserted into the adapter 100, the nut 124 is slid down the pipe 126 until the threaded section 128 of the nut 124 engages the threaded section 118 of the connector 114. The nut 124 is then twisted until the end wall 130 of the nut 124 abuts the inwardly extending flange 112 of the adapter 100. The nut 124 is then turned further to compress the inwardly extending flange 112 and thus provide a substantially water tight seal.
