Abstract
A plastics tie comprises a one-piece moulded body portion 10 in the form of a conventional cable tie further incorporating a socket on the end face of its head for receiving a projection provided on a separately moulded attachment portion 23. The attachment portion may comprise a stud fastening element, a plug, a formation carrying an adhesive pad or any other kind of fastening or fixing. Alternatively, the second member may comprise an identification tag 24. The two-piece tie avoids any moulding problems associated with any disproportionalness between the two portions. Further, the tie can be supplied as a kit of parts with the user being able to select one of a plurality of different attachment portions for attaching to the body portion 10.
Description
Plastics Tie
This invention relates to a plastics tie.
Plastics ties for tying cables and the like are well known. It has been proposed to mould such so-called cable ties as a one-piece with integral fixings or fastenings for fastening the cables to a support structure, such as an automotive panel.
A disadvantage of this arrangement is that the range of different fixings that may be required by a customer is large and thus the customer has to go to the expense of keeping stocks of each different fixing. Furthermore, the ties can be quite large, which makes it physically difficult to carry a selection of ties having different fastenings.
Another disadvantage of ties incorporating fastenings is that the volume of space occupied by the fastening can be large with respect to the volume occupied by the body of the tie itself: this disproportion can cause moulding problems.
We have now devised a plastics tie which alleviates the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a two-piece moulded plastics tie comprising a body portion and an attachment portion, said body portion comprising an elongate strap having a head at one end and means on the head for engaging the strap when the strap is formed into a loop around the object (s) to be tied, the head further incorporating means for engaging said attachment portion of the tie.
The second portion may comprise a stud fastening element, a plug, a formation carrying an adhesive pad or any other kind of fastening or fixing. Alternatively, the second member may comprise an identification tag.
In use, the user merely has to select a suitable attachment portion for attaching to the body portion of the tie.
It will be appreciated that it is far less expensive to purchase just a range of different attachments rather than
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 having to buy a whole range of different ties for different purposes. Furthermore, it is far easier to carry a range of attachments than it is to carry a range of different ties.
The portions of the ties are moulded separately and thus any disproportion in the size of the two portions of the ties does not cause any moulding difficulties.
Preferably said engaging means on the head is arranged to snap engage with said attachment portion of the tie.
Preferably said engagement means on the head is arranged to permit rotation of the attachment portion about an axis relative to the body portion of the tie.
Preferably the head comprises an aperture which is arranged to receive the strap when the strap is formed into a loop around the object (s), said axis of rotation extending perpendicular to the axis of the aperture.
Preferably the head comprises inner and outer end walls and opposite side walls, the strap extending from the inner end wall, said engagement means being provided on said outer end wall.
In one embodiment the body and attachment portion of the tie comprise respective portion of a ball and socket joint.
In an alternative embodiment, the body and attachment portion of the tie may comprise respective portions of a plug and socket, said socket comprising a channel which is open at one end and which comprises a longitudinally extending opening of narrower width than the channel, said plug comprising an enlarged end portion arranged to slide along the channel and a stem portion arranged to extend through the opening.
Preferably a catch is provided for retaining the plug within the socket. Preferably the catch is releasable.
Preferably the attachment portion comprises means for engaging the head of a second body portion, thereby enabling two body portions to be interconnected.
Also in accordance with this invention, there is provided a kit of parts comprising at least one body portion of the tie
and a plurality of different attachment portions for attaching thereto.
Embodiments of this invention will now be described by way of examples only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the underside of one end of the body portion of a tie in accordance with this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the underside of one end of a first embodiment of tie in accordance with this invention;

FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the underside of one end of a fourth embodiment of tie in accordance with this invention;
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of the underside of one end of a fifth embodiment of tie in accordance with this invention;
FIGURE 7 is a perspective view of the attachment portion of an embodiment of tie in accordance with this invention; and
FIGURE 8 is a perspective view of the attachment portion of an alternative embodiment of tie in accordance with this invention.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown one end of the body portion 10 of a tie in accordance with this invention, formed as a one-piece moulding of plastics material.
The body portion 10 comprises an elongate flat strap 11 provided with a series of ratchet serrations 12 on its underside and with a head 13 at one end, the head 13 projecting from the opposite side of the strap 11.
The head 13 comprises an inner end wall 14 and an outer end wall 15 and a pair of opposite side walls 16. A central wall 17 extends between the opposite side walls 16, intermediate the inner and outer end walls 14,15. The central
wall 17 and inner end wall 14 define a passage 18 extending through the head 13 perpendicular to the plane of the flat strap 11.
A resiliently flexible pawl 19 is disposed in the passage 18 for engaging the strap serrations 12 when the free end of the strap 11 is passed through the passage 18
In accordance with this invention, a channel 20 extends into the head 13 between the central and outer end walls 17,15, from the underside of the head 13, the channel 20 extending parallel to the passageway 18. A longitudinally extending opening 21 is formed into the channel through the outer end wall 15 of the head. The channel 20 is closed at its opposite end by the top wall of the head 13. A catch 22 is provided inside in the channel 20 for engaging a formation on the attachment portion of the tie (not shown), as will be explained hereinafter.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, the attachment portion of the tie is in the form of an identification tag 23 formed as one-piece moulding from plastics material. The tag 23 comprises a large rectangular sheet 24 of plastics having a projecting formation at one end for engaging the body portion 10 of the tie.
The formation comprises a circular-section stem 25 having an enlarged circular-section head 26 formed co-axially at its outer end. The diameter of the head 26 of the formation is slightly less than the width of the channel 20 in the head 13 of the body portion 10 of the tie. Thus, the tag 23 can be engaged with the body portion 10 of the tie by sliding the head 26 of the formation along the channel 20, with the stem 25 of the formation extending through the opening 21 in the end wall 15 of the head 13 of the body portion 10 of the tie.
The head 26 of the formation is retained in the channel 20 by the catch 22, which snap engages across the open end of the channel 20, once the head 26 of the formation has been fully inserted.
In this manner, the two portions 10, 23 of the tie are securely fastened together. However, if desired, the catch 22 can be released to allow the two portions 10,23 to be separated. It will be appreciated that the tag 23 is rotatable relative to the body 10 of the tie about a line 27 extending axially of the formation.
In an alternative embodiment, the two portions 10,23 of the tie can be locked against rotation, for example by making the head 26 of the formation square instead of circular, thereby preventing the head 26 from turning inside the channel 20.
Referring to Figures 3 to 5 of the drawings, the attachment portion of the tie may be in the form of one of a variety of different known types of fastening member for fastening the body 10 of the tie to panels, walls or any other surface or object.
Referring to Figure 6 of the drawings, the attachment portion comprises a flat sheet 28 of plastics mounted normal to the longitudinal axis of the tie and having an adhesive pad 29 adhered to its outer surface.
Referring to Figure 7 of the drawings, the attachment portion of the tie comprises a formation having an elongate stem 25 provided with a head 26 at its opposite ends for inserting into the respective channels 20 of two body portions 10 of the tie, thereby enabling two body portions 10 to be rotatably interconnected.
Referring to Figure 8 of the drawings, in this embodiment the attachment portion of the tie comprises a socket 30 for captively engaging the ball 31 of the attachment portion of another tie. The ball and socket 31,30 are each connected to respective square heads 32 that are received in the respective channels 20 of two body portions 10 of the tie, thereby enabling two body portions 10 to be connected together at any angle.
A tie in accordance with this invention is extremely versatile and is yet inexpensive and straightforward to manufacture.
