Abstract

A method of producing an instructional video cassette, for instructing a subject on how to operate a personal computer, wherein the method comprises the steps of providing a personal computer 2 with means for generating video signals corresponding to the images displayed on the screen 6 of the computer and carrying out a pre-determined sequence of operations on the computer whilst simultaneously recording onto a video cassette the video signals generating means. Spoken commentary may be recorded onto the cassette after or during the pre-determined sequence of operations. The method provides a convenient way of producing a instructional video cassette for the instruction of subjects on how to operate a personal computer without the need for a computer to play the video. With the method the subject does not require any previous knowledge of how to operate a computer.

Description

METHOD OF PRODUCING AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO CASSETTE.
The present invention relates to a method of producing an instructional video cassette and, more particularly, to a method of producing an instructional video cassette for instructing a subject on how to operate a personal computer.
Many current computer software applications provide on-screen instructional video clips which demonstrate how a computer may be operated in different ways. However, this instructional material is available only to subjects having access to a computer and requires those subjects to have already attained a basic level of proficiency in operating the computer to be able to display the video in the first place.
It will be appreciated that an instructional video cassette, similar to those already used to provide instruction in many other fields, would clearly overcome the above-mentioned limitations of displaying instructional material on a computer screen, as the material recorded on the cassette could be viewed by subjects not having access to a computer and without any prior knowledge of how to operate a computer.
We have now devised a method for producing such an instructional video cassette in a convenient manner.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for producing an instructional video cassette, for instructing a subject on how to operate a personal computer, said method comprising the steps of : providing a personal computer with means for generating video signals corresponding to the images displayed on the screen of the computer; and carrying out a pre-determined sequence of operations on the computer whilst simultaneously recording onto a video cassette the video signals generated by said generating means.
Preferably a spoken commentary is also recorded onto the video cassette to accompany the screen images recorded during said pre-determined sequence of operations.
The spoken commentary may be recorded onto the cassette either at the same time as the predetermined sequence of operations are carried out or at some later time.
Preferably display means are provided for monitoring the video signal generated by said generating means.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for producing a recording on an instructional video cassette, for instructing a subject on how to operate a personal computer, said method comprising the steps of: providing a personal computer with means for generating video signals corresponding to the images displayed on the screen of the computer; and carrying out a pre-determined sequence of operations on the computer whilst simultaneously recording onto a video cassette the video signals generated by said generating means.
Preferably, a spoken commentary is also recorded onto the video cassette to accompany the screen images recorded during said pre-determined sequence of operations.
The spoken commentary may be recorded onto the cassette either at the same time as the predetermined sequence of operations are carried out or at some later time.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying schematic drawing of an apparatus suitable for producing an instructional video cassette according to the method of the present invention.
Reterring to the drawing, a recording apparatus is shown comprising a personal computer (PC) 2 and a video cassette recorder (VCR) 4, the computer 2 being fitted with a video capture card (not shown) which provides the VCR 4 with video signals corresponding
to whatever images are displayed on the screen 6 of the computer.
A television screen 8, also connected to the VCR 4, provides a continuous display of the video signals produced by the video capture card.
To produce an instructional video cassette in accordance with the present invention, a pre-determined sequence of operations are carried out on the computer 2 by an operator, with the correspondingly displayed screen images being simultaneously recorded onto a video cassette by the VCR 4.
A microphone 10 connected either to the computer 2 or, as shown in the drawing, to the VCR 4 allows a spoken commentary to be recorded onto the video cassette to accompany the recorded sequence of images, either at the same time as those images are recorded or at some later time.
The method thus described provides a convenient means for producing a high quality recording on an instructional video cassette, for instructing a subj ect on how to operate a personal computer.
