Description
GIRTHING AID
This invention relates to a device that aids the buckling of straps under tension.
Buckling a strap under tension requires strength in the fingers to grip and pull.
Many adults and children lack the necessary strength either naturally or due to some ailment.
This invention provides an aid consisting of a hook, a palm piece and a strap which transfers the loads incurred in doing up a buckle to a stronger part of the hand.
The construction of the aid makes it adjustable for various hand sizes and easily carried in a pocket.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the device as it would be carried ready for use. figure 2 shows the top part of the palm piece containing the hook.
Figure 3 shows the bottom part of the palm piece and the webbing layout.
Figure 4 shows the device in use on the girth strap of a saddle.
Referring to the drawing the aid comprises a hook stud 1 mounted in a palm piece 2. The palm piece is attached to a length of webbing 3 arranged in a figure of eight, the lower loop being closed by an adjustable clip 4 attached as shown in Fig 1.
The hook stud 1 passes through the top layer 5 of the palm piece and is held securely to the bottom layer 6 by stitching 11 as shown in Fig 2 and the same stitching 12 in Fig 3.
The webbing 3 is arranged in a figure of eight so that it passes through the palm piece twice as shown in Fig 3. One pass 14 is secured to the palm piece by means of stitching 8,10, and 12.
The other webbing pass 13 is arranged to be free to slide through slots 15 and 16 in the palm piece, by-passing and not constrained by the stitching 12.
The two ends of the webbing are joined by an adjustable clip 4, suitable for one-handed operation.
The aid is fitted to the palm of the hand when required as shown in Fig 4 with the hook stud pointing between the thumb and forefinger and the strap adjusted to give a comfortable tension.
The point of the hook stud is inserted into the appropriate hole of the subject strap 17 and the tension in the strap increased by moving the entire hand in the direction of the arrows 20.
When the buckle has been secured, the hook stud is removed from the strap by reversing the movement of the hand.
The aid can be used with the hook stud pointing away from the thumb and forefinger as would be the case when the user is mounted in the saddle
