Abstract
A multiple socket with at least one outlet which is switched on by an electrical input separate from the mains supply. The socket contains a solenoid to switch on and off the mains electrical supply to the socket outlets. The outlets turn off when the separate electrical supply is turned off. The separate electrical supply may be provided by a computer and activated when the computer is turned on. The outlets may have electrical mains spike protection. Embodiments include a single combined plug and socket (see fig. 1), and a plug with a power lead switched by a separate electrical input.
Description
Computer Peripheral Switch
The invention relates to a mains power supply that is switched on and off by a computer for use with computer peripherals such as external drives, monitors, scanners, loudspeakers and other attachments that a computer uses. There are several versions: 1, a power plug equipped with a solenoid controlled outlet socket (Fig 1) 2, a multiple socket with two or more outlet sockets fitted with a solenoid to control all of the socket outlets (Fig 2) 3, a multiple socket with two or more outlet sockets fitted with a solenoid to control some of the socket outlets (not illustrated) 4, a power plug equipped with a solenoid controlled outlet power cord (not illustrated}
The solenoid fitted to the above switches mains current of 16amps or more.
Switching is by a low voltage supply taken directly from a computer power supply that is activated when the computer is turned on. Access is through a plug and socket through the computer case.
When in use all required peripherals are turned on when the computer is turned on and are turned off when the computer is turned off.
Claims (8)
- CLAIMS 1. A multiple socket with one or more sockets of which all or some outlets are switched on and off by an electrical input separate from the mains supply.
- 2. A multiple socket with one or more sockets which when used with a computer an electrical supply from the computer turns all or most peripherals on when the computer is powered up and off when the computer turns off.
- 3. A multiple socket with one or more sockets as herein described above which where the multiple socket has a non-switched outlet then the non switched outlet would normally be the mains supply to the computer,
- 4. A multiple socket with one or more sockets as herein described above which where the multiple socket has two or more non-switched outlet then the non-switched outlets would normally be the mains supply to the computer and/or the mains supply to peripherals which the manufacturer specifies should not be turned off by the mains supply.
- 5. A (multiple) socket as herein described above with one outlet.
- 6. A multiple socket substantially as herein described above where some or all of the outlets have electrical mains spike resistance.
- 7. A multiple socket substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
- 8. A multiple socket substantially as herein described with mains inputs and outlets which may be different from those illustrated on the accompanying drawings.
