Abstract

A domestic flood barrier comprises a curved plate with vertical and horizontal sealing flanges which is releasably clamped in use to a fixed frame presenting a continuous sealing surface with horizontal and vertical sections.

Description

FLOOD BARRIER Background Dwellings and premises sited on flood plains can be subject to levels of floodwater which although low enough to pose no risk to life, can cause severe damage to property by ingress through doorways.
Technical Features The present invention allows for the quick installation of a barrier around a doorway to prevent the ingress of water up to a limited flood level.
The device provides a permanent sealing face around the lower part of a doorway to which a temporary barrier can be attached with means to seal against the permanent face.
A specific embodiment will now be described by way of an example with reference to the following drawings in which : - Figure 1 shows in perspective the two sections of the flood barrier before they are attached together.
Figure 2 shows in plan and elevation the two sections of the barrier attached and in position around a doorway. Figure 2 also shows in enlarged detail the fixing arrangement and sealing gasket.
The barrier consists of two main sections-a fixed section and a permanent section.
The fixed section (Ref 1) is permanently secured to the building fabric and let into the entrance walkway. The removable section (Ref 2), which attaches to the fixed section, can be removed and stored until required. The fixed section is secured and sealed to the building uprights on either side of the entrance and sunk into the entrance pathway around any step or projection. The section presents a continuous sealing surface facing outwards which runs horizontally below the entrance just above ground level changing direction through 90 degrees via a radius and continuing up on either side of the doorway to a limited height.
The removable section has a vertical and horizontal sealing flange to interface with the fixed section. The flange has a gasket (Ref 3) bonded to it to make the water seal between the fixed and removable sections. The removable section has a body which forms a thin vertical shell connected to the flange to make the water barrier. The body above the flange carries a series of outriggers (Ref 3) spaced at intervals along it on both sides, each outrigger being fitted with a clamp (Ref 4), the end of which engages with a feature in the fixed section in order to clamp the two sections together. The tightening of the clamps around the periphery of the sealing flange will compress the gasket to form a seal and prevent the floodwater penetrating the entrance doorway.

Claims (2)
