Abstract
237,070. Taylor (Birmingham), Ltd., C., and Astbury, G. F. June 19, 1924. Lathes.-In a lathe particularly designed for boring the tapered plug-holes of cocks or for turning the plugs themselves the headstock mav be swivelled to cut on a taper, and the tool-saddle g is fed by means of a nut i engaging a-permanently fixed screw h on the bed and rotated through gearing from a shaft driven by changegearing c from the headstoch-spindle a<3>. The nut carries gears i<5>, in, Fig. 4, the former engaging a gear ) and the latter an idle pinion meshing with a gear j<2>. Either of the gears j, j<2> may be clutched to the shaft d by a dog-clutch l, which mav be operated by hand or automatically through adjustable stops l<3>, l<4>, Fig. 1, on a rod m attached to the bed and the clutch lever l<2>. Depressions l<9> on the saddle may retain the clutchlever in the forward, reverse or neutral position. The nut may be rotated by hand through a wheel n and gears n<3>, i<7>. Ball bearings i<3>, i<4> take the end thrust of the nut. A slider on the saddle is traversable by a wheel g<3> and a screw. Turrets.-Two tools, for roughing and finishing, are mounted in a holder f rotatable in the slide on the saddle by means of a handle and stops to bring either tool into operation. Chucks.-The work e is gripped in a two-part. holder e<3>, e<4> held by the chuck-jaws e<5>, e<6>.
