Abstract

A card 1 (PCMCIA) for use with a device such as a computer 2 comprises a transceiver 4 for communicating with a remote communications network such as a GSM network. The card contains a sub-module 7 with a speech compression algorithm so that compressed signals may be passed between the card and the computer. The computer may archive the compressed signals to act as an answering machine or provide speech to text processing.

Description

Electronic Module
This invention relates to an electronic module such as a PC card or a compact flash card, and in particular to a wireless PC card for use in a mobile telecommunications system.
A commercial mobile telecommunications service typically utilises a cellular network structure in which users communicate using mobile station terminal equipment (mobile handsets) and base transceivers stations located in the cells. In a modem system such as the GSM system (global system for mobile telecommunications), each mobile handset contains a subscriber identity module (SIM).
A PC card (previously known as a PCMCIA card) is a peripheral module which is commonly used in conjunction with a host device such as a personal computer (PC).
In its most common form, a PC card comprises a printed circuit board (PCB) located in a slim casing, the PC card being pluggable into a peripheral port of a PC or other host device in order to perform a particular function. Thus, a wireless PC card might include a GSM transceiver for allowing an associated host device, such as a mobile 'phone handset to access the GSM wirelsss communications network. A PC card generally comprises a plurality of electronic components in the form of sub-circuits or sub-modules.
The present invention provides an electronic module for use with a host device, the electronic module comprising a transceiver for telecommunication with a remote transceiver of a telecommunications network, a data and control interface for passing data and control signals between the electronic module and the host device, and a sub-module containing a speech compression algorithm, the interface being such as to pass compressed speech signals between the electronic module and the host device.
In a preferred embodiment, the electronic module is a PC card, and the host device is a PC or a personal digital assistant (PDA).
Preferably, the module further comprises a connector for connecting a microphone/earphone headset to the module.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic representation of a PC card constructed in accordance with the invention, and an associated PC.
Referring to the drawing, a wireless modem PC card 1 is shown schematically in association with a PC 2. The PC card 1 is provided with an aerial 3 for receiving telecommunications signals from a base station of, for example, a GSM network. The PC card 1 also includes a transceiver 4 for transmitting and receiving telecommunications signals and a microphone/earphone connection 5 for connection with a microphone/earphone headset (not shown).
A data and control interface, indicated generally by the reference numeral 6, is provided to transfer data and control signals between the PC card 1 and the PC 2.
The PC card 1 is also provided with a sub-module 7 which contains a speech compression algorithm known per se. The provision of the speech compression algorithm in the sub-module 7 enables the piping of compressed speech from the PC card 1 to the PC 2. This permits voice conversations to be archived, on the hard disk of the PC 2, in a similar way to that in which e-mail is archived on a conventional PC.
Moreover, when the PC card 1 is in the PC 2, it is possible to send and receive e-mails via the GSM network. In this case, data is sent/received to/from the windows domain within the PC 2, and to/from the PC card 1, which then communicates with the GSM network.
The PC card 1 can also be used to archive voice messages, thereby constituting an answering machine. The key advantages of the invention are that GSM conversations, such as code excited linear prediction (CELP) or adaptive differential pulse code
modulation (ADPCM) can be recorded and archived using a folder scheme like the directory structure in Windows, thereby enabling data processing. Once archived data processing can be applied, for example, to sort by date of call, type of call, and length of . ype all an gth call, as well as to record incoming and outgoing calls and to determine the cost of calls.
Moreover, the opportunity to provide advanced data processing, such as speak-to-text and text-to-speak, is possible.
