Abstract

A hook for laces, eg for lacing boots, comprises a base member 2 for securement to material to be laced, and a cylindrical drum 3 mounted for rotation on the base member, said drum having at least one end flange 3A, 3B to contain a lace on the drum. The hook may be made of plastics or metal.

Description

Title : Hook for Laces The present invention relates to a novel hook for laces, particularly for use on footwear such as boots.
Many items of footwear are tightened around the foot using laces. It is common with boots to use what are known as *speed hooks". These allow the wearer of a boot to quickly lace up the boot without having to thread the laces through holes. A problem with these speed hooks is that the laces tend to chafe when the laces are pulled tight and when the hooks move around relative to each other when the boot is worn.
I The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
'J.
According to the present invention there is provided a hook for laces comprising : '. a) a base member for securement to material to be laced. and b) a cylindrical drum mounted for rotation on the base member, said drum having at least one end flange to contain a lace on the drum.
Preferably the drum has a pair of end flanges.
Preferably a cylindrical projection extends from the base member to provide a rotational axis for the drum, which projection is received by a cylindrical core in the drum.
Preferably an annular flange is provided at the end of the projection remote from the base member which engages with an annular ridge in the drum core to hold the drum on the base member.
Preferably the projection includes a plurality of radially-spaced circumferential cut outs to create a plurality of flexible fingers to allow the annular flange to flex inwards to ride over the annular ridge when assembling the drum on the base member.
Preferably the base member includes at least one aperture to receive a rivet to connect the base member to the material.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a hook, Figure 2 shows a plan view of the base of Figure I without the drum, Figure 3 shows an exploded side view of the base and drum prior to assembly, Figure 4 shows a side view of the base and drum assembled, and Figure 5 shows part of a boot using hooks of the above Figures.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a hook 1 for laces. Hook 1 comprises a base member 2 for securement to material to be laced such as the leather or synthetic material flaps of a boot.
Base member 2 has a pair of apertures 2A, 2B to receive rivets to connect the base member to the material.
A cylindrical drum 3 is mounted for rotation on the base member 2 having a pair of end flanges 3A, 3B to contain a lace on the drum (see Figure 5). Drum 3 has a cylindrical hollow core 4 with an internally-projecting annular ridge 5.
A cylindrical projection 6 extends from the base member to provide a rotational axis for the drum, which projection is received by the cylindrical core 4 in the drum. An annular tapered flange 7 is provided at the end of the projection remote from the base member 2 creating an annular shoulder 7A which engages with the annular ridge 5 in the drum aperture to hold the drum on the base member 2.
The projection 6 includes a plurality of radially-spaced circumferential cut outs 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E, 7F to create six flexible fingers 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, 6E, 6F to allow the annular flange to flex inwards to ride over the annular ridge when assembling the drum on the base member.
As shown in Figure 5. a number of hooks 1 can be secured to flaps 10A,10B of a boot and laces 11 A, 11 B used in a"zig zag"configuration to pull the flaps together. Any longitudinal movement of the laces and/or hooks, when the laces are being tightened or when the shoe is worn, will cause the drums to rotate thus preventing chafe on the laces.
The components of the invention may be made of any suitable material such as plastic or metal.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the drum may rotate on a rivet which also serves to secure the base member to the material. Only one flange could be provided on the drum, e. g. lower flange 3B could be omitted.
The hook of the invention may be used in footwear, or may have applications in other fields, e. g. for use with clothing.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.

Claims (7)
