Additional lifting means such as elongate tines may be provided to lift solids too heavy to be supported by the lifter brush.

Description

A FILTER APPARATUS The present invention relates to a filter apparatus for removing solids from a liquid stream, and more particularly to a filter apparatus including a filter medium in the form of an endless movable belt for removing solids contained in the liquid stream.
The invention is particularly concerned with, but not restricted to, a filter apparatus for removing solids from water or other liquids intended for industrial use or for drinking, or the recovery of solids for further use.
According to the present invention there is provided a filter apparatus for removing solids from a flowing liquid stream, said apparatus comprising an endless filter conveyor belt, support means to locate said conveyor belt, with the lower part of said belt submerged in said liquid stream, and the upper part of said conveyor belt above said liquid stream, drive means to drive said conveyor belt with the upstream part of the belt travelling upwardly, in which the conveyor belt comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced perforated plates, at least one lifter brush extending across said conveyor belt to lift solids from the stream, and to allow the solids to be discharged from the conveyor belt at a discharge region, and a cleaner brush located adjacent to the discharge region to remove solids remaining on the conveyor belt.
Instead of a single lifter brush a plurality of lifter brushes may be provided spaced longitudinally along the length of the conveyor belt. The or each lifter brush may comprise transversely spaced sets of bristles extending from the conveyor belt in an upstream direction.
The cleaner brush may comprise a set of bristles arranged to interact with the bristles of the lifting brush to remove solids therefrom. Preferably the cleaner brush may comprise a plurality of said sets of bristles suitably spaced from one another. In order to facilitate the removal of solids from the conveyor belt, the cleaner brush may be rotatably driven.
The filter apparatus may further comprise additional lifting means extending across the belt to lift solids which are too heavy to be lifted by the lifter brush or brushes. This additional lifting means may comprise a set of transversely spaced elongate members extending from the conveyor belt in an upstream direction. Preferably, the filter apparatus includes a plurality of said sets of elongate members longitudinally spaced along said conveyor belt.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a filter apparatus, Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a lifter brush and part of a filter conveyor belt, Figure 3 is a perspective view of a cleaner brush, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a set of lifting tines extending from a conveyor belt.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figure 1, a filter apparatus of the invention includes an endless filter conveyor belt 2 adapted to filter solids from a liquid flowing through a channel 4 in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1. The conveyor belt 2 passes over pairs of guide wheels 6 and upper tooth wheels 8. The pair of toothed wheels 8 are driving wheels for the conveyor belt and the pair of guide wheels 6 are idler wheels driven by the moving conveyor belt.
The conveyor belt 2 comprises flat metal perforated plates 10 which are hingedly connected to one another by hinges 12.
Each plate 10 has extending therethrough a large number of closely spaced circular perforations 14 dimensioned to prevent the passage therethrough of solids above a pre-selected size.
Referring particularly to Figure 2, a lifter brush 16 consists of transversely spaced sets of bristles 18 mounted on a stainless steel bracket 20 which is mounted on a plate 10 of the conveyor belt 2. The filter apparatus as shown in Figure 1 includes two lifter brushes 16 but will be understood that any suitable number of lifter brushes 16 can be used.
An additional lifting means shown in Figure 4 comprises a set of transversely spaced elongate tines 22 mounted on one of the plates 10. These tines, and the bristles 18, extend upstream of the upstream section of the conveyor belt 2. These tines 22 are spaced and constructed to support solids which are too heavy to be supported by the lifter brushes 16. As with the lifter brushes 16, any appropriate number of sets of tines 22 can be mounted on the conveyor belt 2.
A cleaner brush 24 is located adjacent to the discharge section 26 of the conveyor belt 2. The cleaner brush 24 comprises four sets of cleaner bristles 28 mounted on brackets 30 which are mounted on a tube 32 mounted on a drive shaft 34.
The cleaner bristles 28 and the brackets 30 are dimensioned to extend across substantially the entire width of the conveyor belt 2. Referring particularly to Figure 1, the cleaner brush 24 is positioned and dimensioned so that the cleaner bristles 28 of the cleaner brush 24 will pass through the bristles 18 of each lifter brush 16 when the lifter brushes 16 leave the discharge section 26 of the conveyor belt 2.
Referring particularly to Figure 1, in operation the driving wheels 8 drive the conveyor belt 2 in a clockwise direction, and the cleaner brush 24 is driven by means (not shown) also in a clockwise direction.
All the solids in the liquid stream which are larger than the diameter of the perforations 14 are prevented by their size from flowing through perforations 14 and are carried by an adjacent lifter brush 16 upwardly along the upstream part of the conveyor belt 2 over the pair of guide wheels 6 and along the horizontal upper section of the conveyor belt to the discharge section 26. When the conveyor belt 2 passes over the pair of driving wheels 8 the solids that have been caught and carried by the conveyor belt 2 are discharged from the conveyor belt 2 and fall under gravity onto a suitable receptacle (not shown) located under the pair of driving wheels 8.
Any solid debris that remains on the conveyor belt 2 after it has passed through the discharge section 26, would normally be returned to the liquid stream downstream of the conveyor belt 2 thereby contaminating the stream. In this embodiment, this remaining solid debris is removed by the rotating cleaner brush 24 thereby allowing the solid debris to fall into the aforementioned receptacle. Another advantageous feature of this cleaner brush 24 is that the bristles of the cleaner brush 24 travel in the opposite direction to and pass through the bristles of each lifter brush 16 thereby causing the two brushes to clean each other of attached solid debris.
If any solids in the liquid stream upstream of the conveyor belt 2 are too heavy to be conveyed by a lifter brush 16 these solids are held and conveyed by the tines 22 of the additional lifting means.
In this described embodiment the circular perforations 14 have a diameter of 6 millimetres, but the invention is not limited to perforations of any specific diameter.
