Abstract
A safe includes a lockable box (4) and a base plate (6) where the base plate is attached to the box and is larger than the base of the box. In use the box and base plate are fitted into the boot of a car. Preferably the base plate is similar in size to the boot of a car and includes releasable mountings for securing the safe in the boot of a car. The base plate may further include visible markings such as bright colours or words. The large size of the base plate and the visible markings are intended to deter would be thieves by making the safe cumbersome and conspicuous.
Description
A SAFE The present invention relates to a safe or strongbox and, in particular, but not exclusively, to a safe for use in the boot of a car or other vehicle.
The use of the word"car"in this specification is understood to include other suitable passenger vehicles, including estate cars and people carriers.
The theft of valuables such as laptop computers from car boots is an ever increasing problem. Valuables placed out of sight in the boot of a car are no longer safe from the opportunistic thief
It is known to provide a fixed strongbox in the boot of a car. However, these strongboxes tend to be large and take up valuable boot space. Furthermore, they cannot be easily removed from the car when not required, and fitting of the box can be expensive.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a safe that mitigates at least some of the aforementioned problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a safe having a lockable box and a base plate that is attached to the base of the box and is considerably larger than the base of the box, wherein said base plate and said box are constructed and arranged to fit into the boot of a car.
The advantages provided by this invention are that the safe provides a secure storage space for valuables, but can be removed relatively easily when required. However, it is cumbersome and difficult to carry away without attracting the attention ofpassers-by. The safe therefore provides an effective deterrent against theft, without preventing full use ofthe boot space when required. The safe is also relatively inexpensive to fit.
Preferably the size of the base plate is approximately the same size as the boot of a car. This has the advantage of stopping the safe from sliding around the boot of the car.
Preferably the lockable box is positioned on the base plate such that the base plate extends beyond all four sides of the lockable box. Preferable the box is positioned close to one edge of the base plate.
Advantageously, the area of the base plate is in the range 0. 25m2 to 2. 0nu', and preferably
0. 5m2 to 1. On2.
Advantageously, the base plate is made of a material that can be cut to fit the size of a car boot, preferably mild steel.
Advantageously, the base plate includes visible markings. Preferably the visible markings are bright colours or words painted or otherwise applied to the base plate.
Advantageously, the base plate includes releasable mountings for securing the safe within the boot of a car.
Preferably the lockable box is locked by means of a cylinder lock.
Preferably the safe includes an alarm device.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of the safe;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the safe;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the safe; and
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the safe.
The safe or strongbox 2 has a lockable box 4 attached to a base plate 6.
The box 4 is rectangular in shape and has a lid 8. The dimensions of the box are approximately 400mm x 300mm x 200mm. The lid 8 is attached to one of the walls by means of a hinge 9 and includes a lock 10 for securely locking the box. Preferably the lock is a cylinder lock.
The box 4 is permanently attached to the base plate 6, for example by welding. The box is positioned on the base plate close to one edge of the plate, but such that the base plate extends beyond all four sides of the box. The base plate is square and dimensions of the base plate are approximately 900mm x 900mm, with a thickness of approximately 2mm.
The safe can be made of any suitable material, for example mild steel or aluminium. The typical weight of the safe will be approximately 15kg. The base plate may be made oversized and then cut to the required size in order to fit the boot of a particular car. A customer would then buy a safe and have the base plate cut to fit into the boot of his car.
Alternatively, the base plate may be made to different sizes (for example, four different sizes) to fit the boots of different types of vehicle. The customer would then buy the particular safe that would fit the boot of his car.
The safe may be painted a bright colour, have a warning on it or be customised to include an owner's personal identification on it. The upper surface of the base plate may be covered with a carpet to match the interior of the car.
In use, the safe is placed in the boot of a car. When the safe is required, a person will place their valuables, for example a laptop computer or handbag, in the box 4, and lock the lid 8. The lock 10 on the box 4 is separate from the central locking system of the car and therefore will not be unlocked when the car is opened.
An opportunistic thiefhaving gained access to the boot of the car, will be unable to remove the valuables quickly as these are safely stowed in the locked box. Although removal of the safe from the car boot is possible, this would be cumbersome and conspicuous, which would normally be sufficient to deter the thief
The safe does not take up much space in the boot. Goods can still be placed in the boot of the car, around and/or on top of the lockable box.
The safe can be removed from the boot of the car when access to the spare tyre or tool box is required. Furthermore the safe can be removed from the boot when it is not required, for example when going on holiday. The safe can be safely stored in the garage until required again.
Optionally, the safe may include an alarm device. The alarm is preferably attached to the valuables (for example to the laptop computer) and including an activating device attached to the box, so that the alarm is activated when the valuables are removed from the box.
Alternatively, an alarm may be provided such that it is activated when the box is opened or the safe is removed from the car.
Various modifications of the sale are possible. For example, suitable releasable fixings may be provided for securing the base plate to the boot of the car to prevent it sliding about.
The lockable box and base plate can be different shapes and/or sizes, for example, the base plate need not be entirely flat, but may be shapes to fit the contours of the boot.
The base plate may be made in various sizes, but in the example above it has an area of 0. 8 mn. Generally, the plate will have an area in the range 0. 25nu' to 2. 0m2, and preferably 0.5m2to1.0m2.
