Abstract

A container assembly has a plastics container 1 fabricated from two identical container sections 1A and 1B welded or otherwise secured together in end to end relationship. The container is reinforced by steel plates 10 having bosses 11 which engage in complementary seatings 12 to bridge the container sections 1A and 1B on opposed sides of the container. The bosses 11 may be secured in the recesses 12 by adhesive or mechanical fixings such as rivets 17. The plates improve the load bearing characteristics of the container to alleviate strain at the weld line 7 and permit large containers to be manufactured from relatively small containers with corresponding cost saving in moulding tools.

Description

A Container Assembly
Technical Field and Background Art The present invention relates to a container assembly where the container has a plastics base with plastics walls upstanding from the base. Such a container, which typically has a rectangular parallelepipedon shape to provide opposed side walls and opposed end walls upstanding from the base, is well known for use in retail and manufacturing facilities for the storage, handling/transport and display of goods. The walls may be rigid/integral with the base or may be hingedly mounted on the base so that the container is adjustable to a collapsed condition (usually by pivoting the side walls to overlie the base in parallel relationship therewith) for convenience of storage and transport when not in use. The base may be of a palletised structure to facilitate its handling by forklift or other mechanical devices. The base may also be mounted on ground engaging rollers to provide a mobile container. These latter optional features are well known in container assemblies as is the fact that the assembly can take many different shapes and sizes.
It is recognised that as the size of a plastics container increases so does the size of the required moulding tools and the complexity of the moulding process for its manufacture with consequent increases in production costs. What is currently regarded as a"large"container of the kind discussed that is readily available typically has a base of 1 metre square and a height of 1 metre. It will be appreciated that such a size
of container having the walls rigid and integrally moulded with the base will require a large and extremely expensive moulding tool. Even if the walls are hingedly connected to the base and moulded as separate components, their size calls for relatively large and expensive moulding tools.
Commercially there is a demand for plastics containers of the kind discussed and of a size considerably greater than plastics containers which are generally available and it is an object of the present invention to provide a container assembly which lends itself to economical and commercially viable manufacture to satisfy the aforementioned demand without resorting to extraordinarily large and expensive moulding tools.
Statement of Invention and Advantages According to the present invention there is provided a container assembly comprising a container having a plastics base with plastics walls upstanding from the base and being of a composite structure formed with two substantially identical container sections secured together in end-to-end relationship, each said container section having a base part and wall parts; plates located externally of the container and extending longitudinally to bridge the container sections on opposed side faces of the container, each said plate having a longitudinally spaced array of bosses, which bosses are received in complimentary spaced arrays of seatings in respectively opposed side faces of the container and wherein retaining means is provided for retaining the plates on the side faces of the container with the bosses secured in the seatings for the plates to reinforce the composite structure of the container.
By the present invention the basic container structure of the assembly is fabricated with two substantially identical container sections each having in a base part and wall parts (but not essentially with the base parts of the two container sections being of the same length). Typically the wall parts will consist of a pair opposed side wall parts upstanding from the base and a single end wall extending between the opposed side wall parts. This latter structure may be seen as, for example, a cube shaped plastics container whose length, height and depth is, say, 1 metre that may be derived from a conventional open-topped container having one end wall (and the base region which immediately underlies that one end wall) cutoff or otherwise omitted. Two such container sections which are identical or substantially so are then secured together in end-to-end relationship to provide an open-topped container assembly which is elongated and of approximately twice the capacity of each container section from which it is fabricated. The two container sections will usually be secured together by welding, adhesive or bonding together faces or ends of abutment at adjacent ends of the container sections. Even with such means of securing together abutting faces or ends between the two sections and bearing in mind the considerable size of the resultant container and the likely loads and handling conditions to which it will be a subjected, further strengthening of the composite structure is advisable and to this end the plates are fitted to the opposed side faces of the assembly.
The plates and their bosses will usually be of metal such as stainless steel although they may be of other materials such as plastics. They are fitted for the bosses to engage in seatings
such as apertures, parts or recesses that are moulded or otherwise formed in the side faces of the composite container structure. The bosses are preferably a close press fit in the seatings and may be secured in those seatings to retain the plates by welding, adhesive or bonding or by mechanical fixings such as rivets which engage between the bosses and inner walls of the seatings within which the bosses are received. Where the plates are secured by rivets it is preferred that the bosses are hollow for a rivet head to be captured within the boss so that the rivet head is hidden behind the plate and not visible from the exterior of the container assembly. This
latter fitment is possible by the use of conventional type f < Wt) Ml "pop"/rivets or"Huck"/nvets which can be applied in well known manner when access is available to the rivet from one side only of the component parts that are to be rivetted together.
With the array of bosses secured in the array of seatings on opposed side faces of the container for the plates to bridge longitudinally the two container sections, the joint between those two sections will be reinforced by the plates.
Furthermore, the loading on the plates can be distributed over their longitudinal extent through the bosses to alleviate stress and strain in the plastics of the container over the joint line between the container sections.
Preferably the plates are elongated strip like components and are fitted to the opposed side faces on the base of the composite component structure. It will be appreciated that the plates can alternatively or additionally be fitted to the upstanding walls of the composite container structure. The
seatings in which the bosses are received may be specifically formed for that purpose. Alternatively the seatings may be presented by an existing design feature of the composite container structure. For example the seatings may be recesses formed on the exterior of the container sections by a lattice of webs or flanges that initially or primarily serve to reinforce the structure of the walls or base whilst the plates and their bosses are designed to be fitted to the existing seatings which the composite structure presents when fabricated from two container sections derived from two commercially available containers.
Where the container assembly has walls that are hingedly mounted on the base for the assembly to be collapsable into a compact condition, it is to be appreciated that wall parts of the two container sections may be secured together to form a composite wall prior to that composite wall being hingedly mounted on a composite base that will have been provided by securing together two base sections.
It is to be realised that the composite structure of the container in the assembly of the present invention may have reinforcement or strengthening in addition to the bossed plates, for example by providing metal bars or rods in the base and side walls which form a cage-like structure on or in the plastics of the container.
Exposed external faces of the plates provide a convenient location on which technical, commercial or identification information may be displayed.
Drawings
One embodiment of a container assembly constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container section for use in the assembly; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a container for the assembly fabricated with two container sections as shown in Figure 1 and in which a plate with bosses is shown in position for fitting to the container; Figure 3 is a scrap view illustrating the fitment of a plate with its bosses to the container; and Figure 4 is a section diagrammatically illustrating the retention of the plate on the base of the container by rivets engaging between the base and the bosses of the plate.
Detailed Description of Drawings The container assembly includes a container (shown at 1 in Figure 2) formed as a composite structure fabricated from two substantially identical container sections lA and 1B (one of which is shown in Figure 1).
The container section 1A, 1B is formed with plastics moulded components which provide a rectangular base part 2 upstanding from which are a pair of opposed side wall parts 3,4 and an end wall 5 that extends between the side wall parts 3 and 4. Each container section 1A and 1B is conveniently formed from a conventional open topped container where a second end wall (not shown) would normally be provided, opposite to the end wall 5, to extend between the side wall parts 3 and 4. Such a conventional container would likely have a rectangular parallelepipedon shape, possibly cubic, from which the second end wall and immediately underlying region of the base would be omitted or cut off to present end edge faces 6 on the container section.
To form the container 1 the two container sections 1A and 1B are brought together in end-to-end relationship so that the end edge faces 6 abut. The two sections are then secured together by welding over the abutting edge faces 6 as indicated by the witness line 7. When the two sections 1A and 1B are welded together it will be seen that an open topped container is provided of oblong rectangular parallelepipedon shape with conventional access ports being provided within and on the underside of the base 2 for handling of the container by forklift.
It will be apparent from Figure 2 that the composite structure of the container 1 can have a considerably greater load carrying capacity, almost twice, that of the container from which each of the container sections 1A and 1B is formed. As a consequence it is possible to make use of moulding tools for manufacture of containers from which the container sections 1A
1A and 1B are formed which tools will be far less expensive than moulding tools that would otherwise be necessary to mould the container 1 without the composite structure. Assuming that each container section 1A, 1B is formed from a container of cubic shape and 1 metre long sides, it will be possible for the container 1 to be fabricated to have a length of almost 2 metres with a width and height of 1 metre.
Whilst it is mentioned that the container sections 1A and 1B are identical or substantially so, it is to be realised that the longitudinal extent of the base 2 and opposed side wall parts 3 and 4 of one container section may differ from the longitudinal extent of the other container section thereby permitting variations in the overall longitudinal extent of the side walls 3/4 in the container 1.
With large containers 1 fabricated is aformentioned, especially if the base is provided with feet to form entry ports for a forklift, the base, side walls and welded seam 7 may be subjected to considerable stress and strain as goods are loaded into the container. To alleviate this strain the container assembly includes a pair of elongated stainless steel reinforcing plates (one of which is shown at 10) each of which includes a longitudinally spaced array of hollow bosses 11. In the moulding of the container sections 1A and 1B, the base part 2 is provided, in each of its opposed side faces 2A, with a longitudinally spaced array of rectangular recesses 12. When the two containers sections are secured together as shown in Figure 2 the recesses 12 present longitudinal rectilinear. arrays on each side face of the container base 2 substantially over the length of the container. The bosses 11 are
longitudinally spaced on the plates 10 to correspond to the spacing of the recesses 12. Furthermore, the bosses 11 are rectangular to be complimentary in size and shape to the recesses 12 so that the plates 10 can be fitted one to each side of the container 1 to bridge the weld line 7 with the rectangular bosses 11 being received as a press fit in seatings provided by the rectangular recesses 12. When the bosses 11 are press fitted to the recesses 12, the plate 10 is accommodated-in a complimentary rebate 15 in the side face 2A of the base for the plate 10 to be unobtrusive on that side face.
After the plates 10 have been fitted to the base 2, those
plates are secured to the base by rivets 17 (see Figure 4).
The rivets 17 are of the kind well known in the art as"pop"/ k-rof rivets or"Huck"trivets which are capable of being fitted to
the two components which they are intended to secure together by access to one side only of those components. In Figure 4 it will be seen that each recess 12 has an inner or bottom wall 19, access to which is provided on the underside of the base 2
remote from the outer side faces 2A. A hole is drilled through
the inner wall 19 and an adjacent wall of the hollow boss 11 It-rm following which a head for the Huckt rivet 17 is positioned
within the coinciding drill holes. The rivet head is expanded to form the rivet by retracting a stem on which the head is located in a well-known manner until the stem breaks away from the rivet head when the latter is rigidly secures the boss within the recess. Because of the complementary and close fitting engagement between the bosses and the recesses it may not be required for each of the hollow bosses on the plate 10 to be rivetted to the base 2. Once the plates 10 have been
fitted and secured to the base 2, those plates can accommodate considerable loading that is applied to the base and such loading can be distributed through the bosses 11 over the length of the plate to alleviate strain in the welded joint 7.
Although the plates 10 have been shown fitted to the base 2, it will be appreciated that similar plates can alternatively, or additionally, be fitted to bridge the welded seam 7 on the side walls 3/4 with those side walls being provided with moulded-in recesses (similar to those shown at 12) on the interior or exterior of the container 1.
The plates 10 that are fitted to the exterior of the container provide a convenient surface on which technical, commercial or identification information can be carried.
In the aforegoing description it may be assumed that the side wall parts 3 and 4 and end wall 5 are formed rigid and integral with the base part 2. This is not necessarily so. Often the side wall parts and end wall will be carried on the base part 2 through hinges indicated at 20. The walls can then be pivoted on the base and adjustable from their upstanding condition to overlie the base 2 in substantially parallel relationship for the container to adopt a collapsed condition convenient for its storage and transport when not in use. A conventional form of collapsable container may have its side and end walls removable from the base 2, usually where those end and side walls are mounted by pivot pins as shown at 20A in Figure 4. Where the side walls parts 3 and 4 are removable from the base part 2, it will be appreciated that the abutting end edge faces 6 of the two side wall parts 3 and 4 which are to form a common side wall of the container 1, may be welded together to form the extended side wall prior to that composite side wall being hingedly connected to the base (the latter having been) provided by welding together the base parts 2 of the two container sections 1A and 1B).
