Abstract

A replacement back (Fig 1a or 1b) for a multiple alarm watch comprises two flexible terminals 1 and a lug 2 to which a socket 3 for an ear plug (Fig 4a) can be attached e.g. by screws and shrink fit tubing 11. The back can be either a specially made printed circuit board (Fig 1a) or an insulated board with copper pads (Fig 1b). A modification of the ear plug (Fig 4b) has its end cut off and a safety pin attached for use as a broach. The watch enables hard of hearing people to know when e.g. medicine is due.

Description

Improved audiobility of watch alarm A number of treatments for ailments require that medication is taken several times a day and these may not always be at regular intervals.
A lot of patients are elderly and tend to forget when medication is due. A solution to this is to obtain a wristwatch with several daily alarms whish can be set to the appropriate times. Unfortunately the patients may also have trouble with their hearing and therefore do not hear the alarms under some circumstances.
The purpose of this invention is to relay the output of the watch alarm either directly to an ear or to a position near it.
Requirements The watch must have a number of daily alarms; this is usually five; and a removable back held in place by screws. Also required is a mono earpiece with a 2.5 mm plug and a 2.5 mm chassis mounting socket.
The back of the watch is removed and the screws retained for future use. The replacement back can be either figure la or lb.
Figure la is a specially made printed wiring board having two copper pads (1) and a lug (2) to take the chassis socket (3).
Figure lb is a similar shaped insulated board but having the pads (l) made from thin sheet copper and glued into place (4). This is for use where facilities do not exist for making PWBs. The watch back can be used as a template for making either la or lb. Holes (6) are drilled in the replacement back to accommodate the chassis socket and (7) to enable the socket (3) to be wired (8) and soldered (9) to the pads. Countersunk holes (5) are drilled in the appropriate places to enable the replacement back to be screwed on to the watch.
Figure 2 is a thin sheet of acrylic or similar insulating material having two holes (10) to allow the watch contacts to pass through it and is used as an insulator between the watch and the replacement back.
Figure 3 shows the replacement back fitted with the socket (3) which has been wired to the pads (1). A heat shrink sleeve (11) is placed over the socket (3) and the lug (2) and is heated to hold the socket in position, shown in the insert (12).
Figure 4a is the earpiece which goes into the ear and figure 4b is it modified with the extension (13) cut off and a safety pin (14) araldited into place (16) to it to enable it to be used as a brooch (15).

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A back shown in figure la having pads which are designed to make connection with the flexible contacts extending from the watch mechanism.
  2. 2 A back as claimed in claim 1 constructed from a printed wiring board and having a lug to which can be attached a 2.5mm chassis socket.
  3. 3 A back as claimed in claim 1 constructed from an insulated board with pads; made from thin sheet copper and glued to the board for use where a printed wiring board is not available.
  4. 4 A back as claimed in claim 1 & claim 3 whicb bas boles drilled in the lug to bold the socket and holes for the wiring between the pads and the socket.
  5. 5 A back as claimed in claims 1 & 2 which has countersunk holes drilled in it to enable it to be attached to the rear of the watch.
  6. 6 A back as claimed in claim 1 & 2 which has the 2.5mm socket secured to it with a heat-shinkable tube.
  7. 7 A back as claimed in claim 1 & 2 with 2.5mm socket into which can be inserted a 2.5mm plug connected to an earpiece.
  8. 8 A back as claimed in claim 1,2 & 7 where the earpiece is
0 e n modified by having the extension removed and having a safety pin araldited into place to enable it to be used as a brooch.
  9. 9 A back substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompamying drawing.
